Men gymnasts record high score in loss
by Scott Erskine
Daily Sports Writer

The Michigan men's gymnastics team put to-
gether its highest team score in three years this
weekend in Annapolis, Maryland - and lost.
The Wolverines' 270.85 was no match for the
276.7 posted by the Naval Academy on Friday as
the tumbler's record sank to 2-5-1.
Despite the loss, Michigan coach Bob Darden
was pleased with the performance of his team.
"It was a good weekend for us. We went out
there with the thought that it would be a high
scoring meet, but we didn't realize it was going
to be such a home scoring meet," Darden said.
"The judges had a tendency to place the
performers very well... but the problem we ran
into, is while they were placed well, they just

weren't scored accurately," he added.
Darden said the Michigan scores did not accu-
rately reflect the performances they gave.
However, he found merit in several aspects of
the meet. Darden was very pleased with Scott
Smith, a fifth year senior who scored a 8.05 on
the pommel horse after replacing injured Mark
Ambroe. Smith had only been working out with
the team for a month.
The Wolverine coach was also pleased with
the performance of Glenn Hill, who tallied a 9.7
on the pommel horse and statistically had the
single best score for the Wolverines. Eliot Kim
helped Michigan on the pommel horse with his
career high 9.25.
