ECONOMICS

asked questions in Econ. 201 last fall
because she was intimidated by the
size of the class.
Howard Goldstein, engineering
sophomore agreed. "Econ. should be
taught in a classroom situation as
opposed to lecture. It's hard asking
questions when there are 500 people
in the room," Goldstein said.
Some TAs say the new format
gives the impression the department
doesn't care about teaching its stu-
dents.
"The economics department just
doesn't give a damn about teaching. I
used to get about four to six students
to become an econ major, but now I
only get about one to two," said

Mark Greer, a teaching assistantfor
Econ. 201.
But Professor John Laitner said
the department must also be con-
cerned about its TAs. Teaching three
discussion sections can be extremely
time demanding for a TA, he said.
"With the new format, there is less
for the TA to worry about, and there
is less pressure on the TAs."
There will always be complaints
about a huge class setting, Dern-
berger noted. "I think students get
out of a class what they put into it.
There is no magic formula... no one
can pour in information into stu-
dents," said Dernberger.
"Quality of teaching can make a
difference, but one format over the
other won't make a difference," he
said.

Segregation in the Army Air
Corps during World War II forced
Blacks to fight wars on two fronts,
combatting racism in the ranks
while fighting the enemy in the air.
Tonight, four former military of-

with racism in the military and their
struggles to eradicate it. Three of the
officers belonged to the only Army
Air Corps squadron that allowed
Blacks to fly combat missions dur-
ing World War II.
Members of the squadron later
named themselves the Tuskegee
