Campus
Cinema
FRIDAY
Breathless
(Jean-Luc Godard)
MLB4, 7 & 10:20 p.m./DBL CG
Not to be confused with the
Richard Gere flick by the same
name, this film is the most
influential of the French New
Wave. Existential, romantic,
erotic; cops, gangsters, girlfriends;
it inspires us all "To Live .
Dangerously Till the End."
The 400 Blows
(Francois Truffaut, 1959)
MLB4, 8:40 p.m./DBL CG
Truffaut debuted with this major
contribution to the French New
Wave (not the French cinematic
version of Devo). A good kid is
tormented by adults so he runs
away, but like any good
existentialist he has nowhere to
go.
Persona
(Ingmar Bergman, 1%5)
MLB3, 7:30 p.m./DBL AAFC
A Bergman film about an.
inexperienced nurse (played by
Bibi!) and a mentally depressed
actress (Liv Ullman). This film, to
quote Danny Peary, deals with
"isolation, identity, alienation,
communication, loneliness, guilt,
horror, schizophrenia." What, no
sex-crazed teenage wiseguys?
Lady in the Dark
(Mitchell Leisen, 1949)
MLB3,9 p.m./DBL AAFC
This is not a foreign film, not by a
famous director, and not about
"isolation, identity, alienation,
communication, loneliness, guilt,
horror, schizophrenia," although
Ginger Rogers may be a little sex-
crazed. The first of Hollywood's
many psychiatry-musicals.
SATURDAY
Open City
(Robert Rossellini, 1945)
MLB3, 7 p.m./DBL CG
Co-written by Fellini and
directed by Rossellini, this film is
remarkable for the footage that
was shot while the Nazis were
still in Rome. Film follows lives
of resistance members while the
Gestapo tries to weed them out. A
powerful tribute to those who
opposed the Nazis.
La Dolce Vita
(Federico Fellini, 1960)
MLB3, 9 p.m./DBL CG
Three hours of Marcello
Mastroianni partying it up in
Rome's sweet life. In this Fellini
masterpiece, Mastroianni decides
that since life is meaningless and
worthless he may as well spend it

in orgies and decadent
debauchery.
Pieces of a Dream
(Eddie Wong, 1974)
So Far From China
(Mira Nair, 1983)
Unfinished Business
(Steven Okazaki)
Lorch, 7 p.m. UMASC Free
All three films are Ann Arbor
premieres, the fourth week of
Collage: An Asian American Film
Series. Pieces of a Dream is a
collage about the struggles of
Asian immigrants: So Far From
India explores the responsibilities
that Asian immigrants have to
those they left behind. Unfinished
Business, set in 1942 when over
110,000 Japanese Americans were
forced into resettlement camps,
tells the story of three Japanese
American men who rebelled
against internment.
Sting: Bring on the Night
(Michael Apted, 1985)
Hillel, 7:15 & 9:15 p.m. HSC
The first (and last) of
Hollywood's concert/childbirth
films, Sting's intellectual persona
may bring to mind thoughts about
"isolation, identity, alienation,
communication, loneliness, guilt,
horror, schizophrenia." Includes
his hit song that made divorce the
craze of the '80s, "If You Love
Somebody, Set Them Free.
Quilombo
(Carlos Dieges, 1984)
MLB 4, 7:30 & 9:30 p.m. AAFC
Based on a true story about
runaway Black slaves in Brazil
who formed their own villages,
this stirring film pulsates to the
beat of Brazilian pop star Gilberto
Gil.
SUNDAY
House Party
(Reginald Hudlin, 1989)
Mich, 7 p.m. FVS
Special pre-release showing of the
film that won three major honors
at the recent Sundance Film
Festival, culmination of the Black
Filmmakers Series, and
accompanied by producer
Warrington Hudlin. House Party
chronicles a day in the life of a
grounded teenager and his
attempts to attend his friend's
impromptu sans-parents shindig.
We have received several
complaints from people who say
they can't decipher the arcane
codes used for Campus Cinema
screening locations. For their
benefit, here is a simple guide.
