T O listen to the music of Johann Strauss is to be
whisked back in time to a mid-19th century Vienna: a
fanciful watercolor world of sparkling jewels, swirling
dresses, dapper tails and elegant music. Amid this cul-
tural panorama, Strauss produced some of the most en-
during, enchanting dance music ever written. It's no
wonder that he chose to work with a libretto like Die
Fledermaus, which centers around a magnificent
prince's ball. Fledermaus, originally drawn from a
French vaudeville parody on German manners and er-
rors, returns to Ann Arbor via the Comic Opera Guild
this weekend.
The libretto is a special translation that dates back to
the operetta's first Ann Arbor performance by the COG
in 1975. Since then, the translation has been consis-
tently praised by opera companies around the country.
Fledermaus is a caricature of Viennese culture where
faithfulness and infidelity collide, much to the delight of

rosy-cheeked pranksters and the dismay of jealous
spouses. The music is whimsical, at times sentimental,
and always charming. Strauss was a gifted melodist who
transformed jumping intervals into lyrical lines.
Ted Heusel, having directed over 150 shows, sits
comfortably in charge. Music director Jon Krueger con-
ducts his second Strauss operetta for the '89-'90 season,
the first being A Night in Venice. These two veterans
are joined by an exceptional cast of Michigan singers to
welcome the return of The Bat.
The Comic Opera Guild performance of DIE FLE-
DERMA US will take place Feb. 22-24 at 8:00PM at
the Michigan Theater with a 2:00 matinee on Satur-
day. Tickets are $7, $10 and $12 (students $1 off).

IF big things are said to come in
small packages then Small Cere-
monies, a multi-media production
presented by the Residential
College Players, is one of those
big things.
The actual contents of this
package, however, are somewhat
hard to describe. The production
involves film, acting, music, vo-
cals and choreographed movement
that together showcase original
student poetry. How can all of
these various elements mix? Any-
thing goes in the arts.
The talents of student film-
makers, actors, musicians, tech-
nicians and several Hopwood
award-winning writers are in-
cluded in this all-encompassing
show. LSA junior Eric Peterson,
one of the poets and actors in the
performance, said Small Cere-
monies is a series of small vi-
gnettes focusing on the life of a
protagonist. "Poetry is at the
essence of everything," he said.

For this particular production, it
is the core around which all the
other components revolve. .
Although Small Ceremonies
is an RC production, there are a
fair amount of non-RC students
involved. With RC Players pro-
ducing three shows a year, the re-
tention rate for students partici-
pating from show to show is very
high. New people, however, are
always encouraged. RC Players
was started about 10 years ago by
a group of drama and non-drama
concentrators in the RC. Accord-
ing to member David Hotchkiss -
it was a type of lab for doing the-
ater projects.
Student Heather Hill and
former student Ann-Marie Hub-
bell are the co-directors of this
production, providing two differ-
ent perspectives on the develop-
ment of the show. There is no
real set, just some blocks and a
bit of a wall. "Some of every-
thing," said Peterson. "It makes
audiences step back as well as be-
ing realistic."

If you're still not sure what
Small Cermonies is all about,
fear not. Even Peterson, who is
actually in the show, admits he
was confused at the beginning of
rehearsals almost two months
ago. But everything makes more
sense to him now. "At the very
beginning, we were just reading
the script but now we understand
why we're reading it and what the
poems are about. That's what
makes them so beautiful," he
said.
Small Ceremonies is one of
those shows that needs to be seen
for one to get a true feel for the
different elements that intermix.
It's not a package that can be
ripped open, like a brightly
wrapped present for an eager
child. Rather, it is to be un-
wrapped carefully, revealing bit
by bit its complexity.

take place Thursday through Sat-
urday at 8 p.m. in the East Quad
auditorium. Student tickets are
$4; others $5.
