Don't let us run amok. The Roches revel in the BY MARK WEBSTER THE Roches are coming. In case you've been sheltered by the stadium-rock bombast so predominant in the '80s, they're a bohemia-born trio of sisters who have recorded seven albums, earning them a loyal following. They almost, but not quite, broke into the mainstream in 1979 with their debut, The Roches. The three have their own sound that mingles every- thing from barbershop to doo-wop to polyphonic spiri- tual music. Their humor is definitely weird and audi- ences have many interpretations of Roches songs. "We perceive things on many different levels," Suzzy (rhymes with fuzzy), the youngest Roche, said. "We're weird like complex carbohydrates - you have to chew them carefully, but a lot more good things come out of it." While conservative commercial trends in Reagan- time have helped propagate mass popular music, The Roches' audiences have been growing since the groups' inception, said Suzzy. "Our whole career disproves that audiences won't tolerate difference," she said. "People are kind of starved to find out about things." After a long interval between recordings, The Roches have released a new album, Speak. "We held out for years to make this one," Suzzy said. Their 1985 An- otherWorld, was an artistic ruin. "That was a situation where the record company (Warner Bros.) interfered with the process of making the record," she said. Many of the new songs have more musical sophistication, but the band's trademark quirkiness remains. "Cloud Dancing" swirls a spoof of a lover's fantasies with sweet and sur- real vocalizations of true beauty. The quirks beneath the surface can be wise cracks, or truthful laments beneath a screen of bathos, as on "Losing Your Job.". All three of the band members compose songs, which vary distinctly in style as do their individual on- stage performances. Terre, the middle sister, plays fine lead guitar and sings the most impressively, in a clear soprano. Maggie writes introspectively and sings in a timbred alto, filling out the bottom range. Suzzy sings alto soprano and entertains audiences between songs with sometimes cutting humor. See ROCHES, page 8 CLASSIFIED AIDS STUDENT SERVICES SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS .-_-GRADUATE Students.
