In their previous 16 seasons, the Wolverines longest conference *inning streak was three games, occurring in only three of the last four seasons. Earlier in the season, junior co- captain Carol Szczechowski said that a fourth-place Michigan finish in the Big Ten would guarantee them an NIT bid and give them a shot at the NCAA Tournament. With Ohio State's overtime win over Purdue on Sunday, the Wolverines stand just one game behind the fourth-place Buckeyes and a game and a half behind Iowa. SULTAN OF SWAT: Trish Andrew added to her Big Ten lead in blocked shots with eight this weekend, giving her 31 on the year. Andrew swatted a season-high five in the win against Northwestern in front of family and friends. The first- year center hails from Winnetka, Illinois. C LEANING THE GLASS: Senior co-captain Tanya Powell's 16 rebounds moved her into first place on Michigan's all-time career rebounding list. Grabbing eight in each of the weekend contests left Powell's total at 754. D OWN AND OUT: A noticeable vacancy on the Michigan bench was Barb Loeher. The junior guard went down with torn ligaments and cartilage in her right knee during pre-game warmups before last Sunday's Ohio State game. She will be out for the rest of the season and plans to undergo surgery in the near future. Scorecard AP Top 25 Men's Baskethall Teaims - -- -v . ---a t asa a 1. Missouri 2. Kansas 3. Duke 4. UNLV 5. Ra Oklahoma State Arizona State Iowa Nebraska Indiana Iowa State Penn State Oklahoma Northern Iowa Bakersfield Minnesota North Carolina Michigan West Virginia Northwestern nked Wolverines With all the chit-chat among Michigan football fans focusing on prep superstar tailback Ricky Pow- ers, the Wolverines' new recruiting class may bring about a few other changes in the Michigan offense worth discussing. Michigan coach Gary Moeller and recruiting coordinator Bob Chimel avoid talking about a single player out of a recruiting class, but it is hard for fans not to scream and yell about a rusher who gained 2,000 yards last season as a high school senior. And though Powers would lead any recruiting class he decided to join, Michigan coaches are playing down his immediate importance. "I'm happy with Ricky obvi- ously," Moeller said. "Yet I'm also happy with the other kids we signed (at running back). They will be given an opportunity as well." Chimel added: "Each running back is unique. They all have their own style and their own way of be- ing effective." Michigan did not sign any big fullbacks to block for Powers and company. The Wolverines had hoped to sign Jerome Bettis out of Detroit MacKenzie, but Bettis went to Notre Dame. The absence of a big back may necessitate the move of Greg McThomas, possibly Michigan's top linebacker signee, to fullback. Moeller will wait until spring prac- tice before talking seriously about line-up changes. What Moeller can't help but mention is how Michigan bulked up at positions where they were already strong, most notably quarterback. In the recruiting period, Michigan signed two big quarterbacks known for their promise as passers - Todd Collins and Nate Holdren. The new personnel behind the center may mark the biggest change of all at Michigan - a change in philosophy. Nobody at Michigan seemed too upset by the loss of the state's top quarterback, Mill Coleman, to arch- Taylor 134 lbs. 150 158 190 HWT Joey Gilbert 9th Larry Gotcher 8th Sam Amine 11th Fritz Lehrke 6th Phil Tomek 9th *according to Amateur Wrestling News CILASSJFIED ADS FOR RENT AFFORDABLE HOUSING Rooms, efficiencies, one, two, & three bed- room a pts. 4,.6, & 8 bedroom houses, fur- nished/unfurnished. John Wangler. Besides the potential shift in of- fensive thinking, Powers has talked about something as a recruit that most Michigan players refuse to talk about as graduating seniors: winning the Heisman Trophy. Could the Wolverines eventually move closer to having a star system that has been noticeably absent from Michigan football? Moeller is willing to wait and see. "What kind of impact player he will be, I don't know," Moeller said. "I don't want to put too much pres- sure on him too soon." If Michigan's backfield changes aren't enough, the team signed two wide receivers, Walter Smith and Allen Woodard, who fit the physical mold of receivers from the Univer- sity of Houston, known for its run- n-shoot offense. Whoa, just a second! This crazi- ness may be just a bit too radical for the conservative Michigan football fan. But Moeller wants to see changes in the sometimes stodgy Wolverine attack. Whatever forma- tion the Wolverines come out in, Michigan's newest arrivals can give Moeller some added options. Chimel warns fans that recruiters can't look for a particular kind of player; they have to sign the best players they can get. Yet Moeller has signed the kind of players he can use to mold his football team. If po- tential Heisman Trophy running backs and quarterbacks with John Elway-like arms are coming to Michigan who knows what else may follow?
