Friday night's final event, the 800 freestyle relay followed suit with the rest of the day. In victory, Michigan set a new Big Ten record and again qualified for the NCAAs. Increasing the point-spread by another 96 points, the final day of competition was another triumph, team-wise, for the Wolverines, but it was also plagued with individual disappointments. "I really have mixed emotions about this meet," Richardson said. "There are about three or four people who didn't swim as well as they could have, who could have qualified (for NCAAs). They put a lot into their season and they deserved to do better in front of their parents and friends." Yet, a few sparks lightened the day. Both Creighton, in the 1,650 freestyle, and frosh Missy McCrack- en, in the 200 butterfly, made the NCAA cuts in their events. Sophomore Jen Love rebounded from a disappointing 5th place in the 100 freestyle to anchor the 400 freestyle relay. Love forged ahead in the final length to out-touch North- western by six tenths of a second for the victory and an NCAA qual- ification. But the highlight of the meet took place out of the water when the entire team stood arm-in-arm on the winner's block. They accepted their Championship plaque as their ren- dition of Hail to the Victors rang through the rafters. 0 11 0 During Saturday night's finals at the Big Ten finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, qualifying Championships, senior Jennifer Eck swam to a second place her for the NCAA Championship meet in March. Saturday night, the Michigan's women swim- ming and diving team proved to everyone present there is more to competition than just victory. Every Michigan member remembered she was a part of a team. Everyone remembered what the word 'humble' meant and that, contrary to popular belief, it isn't what's said before the competition but what's done at the competition that matters. The first thing one noticed upon walking into the Indiana University Natatorium were the great number of posters hanging all around the pool. They used catchy phrases, urging one team or another on to victory. The OSU Buckeyes' claimed "We worked ours off, to beat yours." The Badgers had Arsenio Hall shouting "Kick it." But if one continued to look around the Natatorium the only thing he or she would notice inspiring the Wolverines was a big blue cloth saying "Michigan Wolverines." Co-Captain Ann Colloton summed it up best when she said, "We didn't put up any of those posters, because we didn't need them." The Wolverines got their excitement from other places, like the desire to do well for the team and from the entire team's cheers during a race. When captain Amy Honig swam the 1,650- yard freestyle, the meet didn't hang in the balance. But if you watched the team's reactions you might have been mistaken. The whole team lined Honig's side of the pool and cheered. They cheered for the entire race, the full 18 minutes. The team seemed to follow the example of head coach Jim Richardson. After a big race involving two Michigan swimmers, in which one won the race and the other finished 5th, who did the coach praise? Not the winner,, but the swimmer who finished 5th and achieved a personal best. He gave her the highest adulation a coach can give by saying, "I'm so proud of you." Throughout the meet many Michigan swim- mers qualified for the NCAA Championships and riled the Wolverine bench. However, there were some Michigan swimmers who didn't qualify but weren't forgotten. The first words out of Colloton's mouth when asked about next week's meet (the Michigan Open) were, "It's a key, key, key, KEY meet. We have three or four people who still need to qualify." The 'team comes first' attitude runs deep within the Michigan squad. Deep into their senior core. Thankfully the team resembles the selfless seniors. Coach Richardson, who centers the team on the seniors, wants to continue the team's attitude next year. "We are willing to take our lumps next year, for team character." At the close of the meet, the great character of the swim team was still there. Traditionally, at the end of a successful Championship meet the team throws key people into the pool. But as the, coaches and star swimmers were being thrown in left and right and a dry swimmer's name was called to be dunked, a responding cry was heard, "Let her get her shoes (off)!" After all was said, Colloton was asked if it was sweeter to win the championship with pre- sence of a great team attitude. Her reply: a vigorous affirmative head shake. 0 Swimmers overcome difficulties by David Schechter Daily Sports Writer_ With the the high-tech scoring equipment in Canham Natatorium out of order, the Ohio State Buckeyes might have thought they were faring well against the Wolverines. Not until after the meet, when the scores were manually totaled did the truth come out. Michigan 89, Ohio State 42. The scoring system was not the only thing out of order Saturday. Distance swimmer Scott Ryan, hoping to post a season-best time in the 1650 freestyle was hampered by a weak hip flexer that had been' bothering him all week. "I didn't do too well. I had an off day," said Ryan. He thinks that his poor showing with a time of 16:23.80 is probably a by-product of the injury. "I've been icing it and treating it... but in the mile, you know, you need that kick to compliment your pull, and I tried my best not to kick because I was hurting in my hip," 1650 at Big Ten's. I was trying to make the NCAA qualifying time, but I was off by a little bit." He looks to the Big Ten meet to record that qualifying time. "I'll just give it another shot at Big Tens and see how it goes. It should be a lot' better I hope." "I hope to go much faster at Big* Tens though, just because the competition there will be much more intense and should push me to go a lot faster I would think," he said. Namesnik has already qualified for the NCAAs in the 400 meter Individual medley. Noetzel likes what he's seen from, his distance swimmers, "If they swim well in 1650 then they are, pretty much writing their own ticket to win the Big Ten Championship., Win it or go 1-2 (in the standings)." Newcomer Brian Gunn swam a season best in 100 butterfly posting ' a time of 50.42. He also picked up:. 'victories in both the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestlye. The 50 and 100 freestyle wereta both captured by team co-captain Brent Lang. The Buckeyes won only two events, thelOO0 breastroke and the 200 IM. "Depending on how well other people do this weekend, like other Big Ten teams might be swimming the mile as well. If some of those swimmer's beat my time I might end up ninth instead. But I have a pretty good time," Ryan said. Still Ryan is confident. "I don't see anybody knocking out of the top eight." Freestyler Eric Namesnik fared better than his teammate. In fact, Namesnik lapped Ryan in the 1650. "I felt pretty good about my swim. I felt really good during the race,"said Namesnik.
