The Michigan Daily - Monday, February 19, 1990 - Page 5 Business leaders discuss reasons behind Japanese success by Bruce Shapiro Representatives from six U.S. and Japanese companies discussed e practices behind Japan's business success during a forum Friday in the business school. Hitachi America, Mazda Motor 'ianufacturing, Dow Corning, and jhe law firm of Dickinson, Wright, 'loon Van Dusen & Freedman par- ticipated in the forum in addition to UJ niversity business professors . " The forum, which was sponsored * y the International Business Club, was conducted in a question and answer format. Stuart, the director of central re- search and development at Dow Corning, said'"Japan's sense of ur- gency in getting things done" is a major difference between Japanese and U.S. business practices. Stuart added that he thinks this urgency is a part of the Japanese culture. Rikuma Ito, vice president of En- ergy Conversion Devices, Inc., said he thinks Japan's negotiating power has been a major factor in their suc- cess. Ito said companies in the United States must learn to be better negotiators and know more than the company they are negotiating with. Nancy Hennigar, public relations manager of Mazda Motors, agreed with Ito saying that U.S. companies need to gather as much information as they can and move away from the conventional methods of gathering information. Clyde Stoltenberg, executive di- rector or the East Asia Business Pro- gram said he also feels the Japanese companies take more time in study- ing concepts and ideas compared to American companies. Stoltenberg said one reason for American busi- ness failures is they often dive into a business venture before carefully considering it. Attorney Toshuiyuki Arai said another reason for the success of Japanese companies is that they work as groups compared to the American concept of individualism. Le Ann Eriksson, a graduate stu- dent in the business school and Rackham, said the forum was very informative for students with career interests in Japan. Toshiro Okada, a first-year stu- dent in the Business School, how- ever, disagreed, he said he would have liked more discussion on em- ployment practices of the two countries and said the forum "wasn't as informative as it could have been." Attorney Toshuiyuki Arai said a reason for the success of Japanese companies is that they work as groups compared to the American concept of individualism.
