First place Wildcats on tap for women cagers by Ryan Schreiber Daily Basketball Writer The Michigan women's basketball team looks to extend its three-game winning streak at Wisconsin and Northwestern this weekend. Wisconsin (7-13 overall, 2-8 Big Ten) relies on Robin Threatt (13.5 points per game) and Michele Kozelka (13.4 ppg) for its scoring. In their last meeting, the Badgers held the halftime edge over Michigan, 29-27, behind Threatt's nine points and seven rebounds. Michigan (14-7, 6-5) still pulled away for the 68-5 1 win. However, Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege expects things to be different tonight in Madison. "The critical thing about Wisconsin is that they are extremely tough at home," VanDeWege said. "Just because we beat them here does not mean anything in terms of going in there on Friday. We have to respect them a great deal." On Sunday, No. 15 Northwestern will provide a difficult game for the Wolverines. In January, the Wildcats (18-2, 9-1) stomped on Michigan, 92- 62. "They're in first place alone, so we expect a tough game," Michigan co- captain Carol Szczechowski said. "They're really a difficult team, but I think it's realistic that we can beat them. "They don't have anything like someone really huge inside that's tough or someone from the outside that can dominate us." The Big Ten's third-leading scorer Michele Savage (19.1 ppg) will return at forward for Northwestern after sitting out last week. Her replacement, 0 junior guard Jeanine Wasielewski, scored a career-high 20 points against Wisconsin last Friday to lead Northwestern to the 73-62 win. Northwestern's depth could prove to be pivotal in their final eight conference games, as they hold a half game lead over second-place Purdue. Trying to extend its winning streak to four games, Michigan is coming off an impressive upset of Ohio State last Sunday, 58-55. "We're playing our best basketball of the year right now, so I obviously feel good about that," VanDeWege said. "Now we're heading for a road trip, and we've just got to avoid a letdown." * Men tankers take on OSU in final dual meet The Michigan Daily - Friday, February 16, 1990 - Page 11 OSU next up on rough road agenda by Mike Gill Daily Basketball Writer Looking back is always a lot easier than looking ahead. Looking back, one can say Michigan should have beaten Indiana and Iowa on the road. Now looking ahead, the Wolverines face their biggest road challenges yet. Entering last night's -game against Minnesota, the teams Michigan still must play on the road (Minnesota, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Purdue) have an 18-4 home record. The Wolverines' three remaining home opponents (North- western, Wisconsin, and Iowa) have a meager 1-18 road record. It's evident that much of the Wolverines' Big Ten title hopes rest on the success of their current two game road trip. The trip started last night in Minneapolis and concludes Sunday in Columbus against Ohio State. The Buckeyes, under first year coach Randy Ayers, are out of the race for the Big Ten crown at 5-6 in the conference, 11-10 overall. Yet, when they entered Crisler Arena January 18, the Buckeyes almost stunned the Wolverines, before fall- ing 90-88. Michigan (8-3; 18-4 overall before last night) won the game in large part because of the spark Demetrius Calip provided off the bench. Calip led all scorers by scoring a Big Ten career-high 19 points, hitting six of nine from the floor, two of three from behind the three point line, and five of six from the free throw stripe. Calip, in the starting rotation since Sean Higgins went down with a foot injury two weeks ago, has sparked the Wolverines to three straight conference wins entering last night's contest. The Wolverines have become more patient with the basketball and have worked the ball inside to big men Loy Vaught and Terry Mills for easier baskets. Vaught leads the conference in rebounding with a 11.8 average and Mills is fourth, grabbing 8.1 per contest. Vaught is averaging 14.6 points per game, Mills 17.3. Guard Rumeal Robinson leads the Wolver- ines with a 19.6 average. The inside game will be a battle though, with Ohio State frosh phen- om, Jimmy Jackson, taking on the Wolverine big men. Jackson, last week's Big Ten Player of the Week, is averaging 18.6 points per game, eighth best in the conference. Perry Carter also could prove to be a nemesis. Carter is averaging 15.5 ppg, along with 7.5 boards per game. The two will test the Wolver- ines upfront advantage and depth. DAVID LUBLINER/Daily Michigan foward Terry Mills, shown here battling Ohio State's Bill Robinson, had 24 points in last night's 77-73 win over Minnesota. Mills hopes to put up similar numbers in Sunday's game at Ohio State. by David Schechter Daily Sports Writer Scarlet and gray is just another color combination as far as the Michigan swim team is concerned. The Wolverines will compete against Ohio State tomorrow in Michigan's final dual meet of the season. They aren't worried, though. "This is a last chance tune up before the Big Tens... but there real- ly isn't anything on the line," Coach Jon Urbanchek said. Distance swimmers Scott Ryan and Eric Namesnik, however, will need to swim strong times in the 1650 meter freestyle to qualify for a position for the conference champ- ionships. For each event, the top eight swimmers of the season qualify for the Big Tens. Ryan and Namesnik hope their times will be good enough to earn them a spot, and possibly qualify for the NCAA's. "They need to swim fast in order to get into the finals. This will be their last chance to swim the 1650...that's probably going to be the highlight of the meet" said Urbanchek. "I don't really think there is any pressure. It's not a major deal if I don't qualify for the NCAA's this weekend in that event," Namesnik said. Ryan also has some thoughts on the big race: "It's either going to be a good swim or a bad swim. We just started resting... and when you start resting you feel a little more energetic. But you just can't tell until that day," Ryan said. "I feel I can swim a really good mile. But I'm not under pressure.". GOPHERS Continued from page 1 Ten) moved into a second-place tie with Michigan State in the conference, a half game behind Purdue. Minnesota (16-6, 7-5) dropped to fifth place in the league. It was the first home loss of the season for Minnesota, which has won 26 of its last 28 games at Williams Arena. Terry Mills scored 24 points for Michigan, which never trailed. With Michigan leading 53-50, Robinson made a layup and a three- point shot and Mills made two short jumpers to give the Wolverines a 12-point lead with 10:10 left. But Minnesota then went on a 16-7 run to cut the lead to three points. Melvin Newbern completed a three-point play to make it 75-73 with 1:21 left, but Robinson and Tony Tolbert each hit a free throw in the last 43 seconds to put the game out of reach. 1.
