ARTS Thursday, February 15, 1990 The Michigan Daily McKnight writes of the mystic and real Page 7 Gods rise from Aurora BY SHARON GRIMBERG R EGINALD McKnight writes Whort stories; he's been writing them since he was eight years old. And out of the plethora his first pub- lished collection, Moustapha's Eclipse, winner of the 1988 Drue Heinz Literature Prize, represents what he calls "the very best of my work." It's a colorful collection of sto- ries that resonates with compassion nd perspicacity. A diversity of voices echoes throughout his work. He voices both the vehemently vio- lent musings of a white racist in Re- birth, and a young Black woman's confusion over her relationship with her white boyfriend in Peaches. The most compelling of his sto- ries, however, are those that emerge from the year he spent in Senegal. This was a year during which, be- sides spending much of his time al- ternately contracting and recovering from malaria and hepatitis, he taught English as a foreign language. These stories, set in West Africa, deal with the conflicts that confront a Black American intellectual facing the mysticism and spiritualism of tradi- tional African folk culture. In Mali Is Very Dangerous, a mildly ironic tale, an American an- thropologist arrives in Senegal with a research grant to study the West African market system. Within 48 hours, Moustapha Diole, "a snaggle- toothed illiterate old man," has bam- boozled him "into buying trinkets a kleptomaniac would scorn." Mou- stapha proceeds to offer his new "friend" a juju (magic belt), after having demonstrated its protective power by repeatedly plunging a pocket knife into his apparently im- penetrable belly. The American is BY PETER SHAPIRO EVERY time popular culture has been sucked dry of everything that makes it vaguely human, it has been rescued by a visionary's firm kick in the butt. Whether it was Charlie Parker, Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, or The Ramones, "somebody always came to save America." Unfortu- nately, no such saviour has appeared since punk and the future is looking Reginald McKnight torn between cynicism and total as- tonishment: "I alternately envisioned myself single-handedly stopping crime in the United States, and wind- ing up dead from self-inflicted wounds in my little Senegalese bun- galow." Though much of his work deals with sociological issues - social conflict within African American culture as well as conflicts between Black and whites - he chooses not to see his work as largely emblem- See MCKNIGHT, page 8 CLASSIFIED ADS STUDENT SERVICES THE WORDWRIGHT **Word processing/typing/editing. On the surface, they look like one of those struggling metal bands who, unable find a gig, turn to glam rock and play in seedy dives in Ham- tramck and the Jersey Shore - ex- cept they don't have the processed hair yet. But these five dementos play music that is so twisted and de- praved that they can't be serious. Or are they? There were some people' who didn't know that Spinal Tap was a put-on. Their music works so' well because of this dynamic tension between amoral lunacy and parody. The members of Uranus and the' Five Moons name themselves after the Norse pantheon: Ygdrasil the World Tree on vocals, Thor on rhythm guitar, Loki on bass, Odin the dictator o' the blues on drums, and the nomenclature exception Cur- tis M. the Boogie King on lead gui- tar. Within this sleeve are 10 chaotic songs ranging from the speed metal sex taunt "Love Me, Love My Snake" to the emotionally ravaged "Big Boned Women Blues." The album's first song, "Love Me, Love My Snake" is one that is sure to work up the ire of Tipper Gore. After going through every bla- tant sexual inuendo imaginable, Yg- drasil sings the closing couplet with a frightening deadpan: "C'mon try some pederasty/ It really isn't that nasty." Next comes the tour ballad, "The Road Ain't No Place to Fall in Love." With lines like "Girl, I'm missing you everyday/ I see your face in all the lights" and "Another city, I climb up on stage/ Another sad story, turn the page," they must be joking.
