Michigan (9-3, 1-1) travels to Col- umbus today for a nationally tele- vised game versus Ohio State (1:30 pm ESPN) and then journeys into Bloomington to play Indiana Sunday. Following a convincing 8-2 pre- conference record and a split of the first two Big Ten games, this weekend could prove to be one of the Wolverines' most critical. "The pre-season games gave us con- fidence, and the Minnesota game showed how good we could be. At this point we're inches away from being great and inches away from being just a good team," co-captain Carol Szczechowski said. According to Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege: "This is about as hard a road trip as we have. (This trip), especially with the national television exposure is important. It will make a statement about our program and where we're at." The Buckeyes (7-5, 1-1) enter today's game with a 63-game Big Ten home court win streak. Last season's Big Ten co-champions will definitely provide tough com- petition for Michigan as they come off a 72-64 victory at Wisconsin. Sunday's opponent, Indiana, possesses an explosive offense, av- eraging close to 73 points a game. Zandrea Jefferies, the Big Ten's fourth leading scorer (18.5 ppg), heads a list of four Hoosiers av- eraging in double figures. Jefferies, Lori Meinerding (16.0), Courtney Cox (11.0), and Ann Zellers (10.0) will combine to give the Wolverine defense one of its stiffest tests of the season. The Wolverines, how- ever, remain optimistic about their chances this weekend. "I think if we play our game and stick together like we have been we'll come out with two wins," Michigan center Trish Andrew said. by Lory Knapp Daily Basketball Writer Michigan will be looking for its first Big Ten win of the season as the Wolverines play host to the No. 16 Golden Gophers (10-1 overall; 1- 0 Big Ten) Saturday afternoon at Crisler Arena. The Wolverines, whose miserable second half performance resulted in a 69-67 loss to Bobby Knight's In- diana Hoosiers in their conference opener, are looking to prove that they can put together forty minutes of solid basketball. Minnesota, on the other hand, is al-ready well on its way to proving that it is a legitimate Big Ten contender. In fact, after a mediocre 9- 9 conference season last year leading to a fifth place finish, the Golden Gophers have played impressively this year, winning ten in a row after an opening loss to Cincinnati. Minnesota's most impressive win of the season came at home against then No. 4 ranked Illinois. In the 91-74 victory against the Fightin' Illini, Minnesota center Richard Coffey pulled down a game high 12 boards and guard Melvii Newbern, who led the league ia steals last season, scored a season- high 27 points. Newbern said that he'd be willing, to give up that defensive honor if Minnesota could win the Big Tcn title, something the Golden Gopher have not accomplished since 1982. "I want so bad for our team to win the Big Ten Champion- ship,"said Newbern. "In the back of my mind I (keep) remembering getting beat by 20 or 25 a night a few years ago." After beating Illinois last Satur- day in their conference home opener Minnesota is undefeated at home. Winning at home has not normally been a problem for Clem Haskin'I Golden Gophers. But last season's L- 8 Big Ten road record needs to be improved upon for Minnesota to contend for the title. Last season, the home team was victorious both times the teams met.
