Club music dances to a funky groove

4

BY FORREST GREEN III
*so it's a new year and you're feel-
ng pretty hip. You've danced to acid
bouse at the Nectarine or U Club,
and you've got a copy of the new
Boogie Down Productions or Young
MC. But have you heard of these
'trendsetters? Check it out - the
,newest school.
Paris Mark Toon is an amaz-
ingly promising new producer who
ails from Massachusetts; he dabbles
bout with both of the industrial
:sounds, hip hop and house. His new
,single, "Sunshine/Paris Just Housin'
Around" should justifiably win him
kudos from Chicago over to Manch-
ester. Paris definitely fits the def bill
for both genres, but he breaks down
,all the status quo prerequisites and
returns you to a time when the craze
was truly exciting. Not satisfied

Dance faculty
present Vital
Elements
The University Dance Com-
pany's production Vital Elements:
Dances for 1990 at the Power Cen-
ter this weekend presumed to have
essence and energy, yet both were
visible only in small doses.
Two acts of foreplay preceded the
real passion of the concert with five
long-winded pieces which espoused
more substance than they exposed.
Videotaped interviews blown up on a
giant screen prefaced each of the
dances with tedious, emotionless
talking heads a la the Citibank Visa
ads. In these brief glimpses, the five
choreographers - University De-
partment of Dance faculty Jessica
Fogel, Bill DeYoung, Linda
Spriggs, Gay Delanghe, and Peter
Sparling, and musical director
Stephen Rush - rambled on about
aspects of their art and the forces that
influence them.
Some numbers created strong ini-
tial impressions but quickly fizzled.
Fogel's "School of Ives" presented
rows of wooden school chairs occu-
pied by dancers in black with fluo-
rescent right hands - but the dark-
ened, portentous image led nowhere.
Later, in DeYoung's "Ghost Dance,"
silhouetted figures in Road Warrior
attire emerged from a fog as a large
sun rose, but somehow the energy
didn't leave the stage. The audience
remained outside the action.
Other numbers flagged from
sloppy performances and unclear di-
rection. Frequently there was too
much movement; the dancing hid the
"dance." Spriggs' two works were
well performed and designed, yet re-
mained monotonous. Another work,
"Humandinos," attempted to parallel
the dinosaurs' extinction and our
own existence. Only John Schak's
marvelous, spiked tyrannosaurus
costumes saved Delanghe's blurred
impressions from instant decay.

with funking just one groove into
your id, Paris crosses ground and
boundaries as well.
Samples of Jill Jones and Morris
ay float about in the sensual haze,
alongside plenty of orgasmic utter-
ings and cybotronic spacey breaks.
There's an abruptly arranged mind-
fuck-break featuring Karyn White
samples; particularly clever is the
break for "vogueing" - the newest
dance trend created for super-chic
models and pretentious types to pose
and look hipper-than-thou. On the
'pseudo-rap "Sunshine," MC Silky
.and company plunder "Lean on Me"
and "You Are My Sunshine" with
Pie sly abandon of a modern-day Par-
liament on ecstasy. Never slouching
in the sensuality department, Paris
Reminds me of Kraftwerk or New

Order in their better days. By all
means necessary, check it out.
The Digital Underground is
waiting for the time; let's hope it
comes soon. Imagine, if you will, a
rap band rather than a concept, more
abstract than Stetsasonic. The DU
consists of three rappers - Humpty-
Hump, Shock G and Chopmaster J.
Add on a DJ and a pianist hand-
picked from Detroit, and you've got
"humpty funk" - a bit of the old-
school Sly Stoned swing, some mo-
torvating groove stuff, pseu-
dosoulypsychedelic daisy stage the-
atrics, and even some of the standard
pop-based soul fix. That's the sound
of the Underground.
Their first single, "Doowutchya-
like," never quite broke out of its
cult niche; critics, rap hipsters and
the like all took different perspec-

tives on the song, and, despite its
flamboyant hedonistics, the song
never took flight. Shock and
Humpty spin wutchyalikes around
and around until there's just license
for a revolution. This is one hell of
a party song; my favorite line goes,
"Just act a fool/ it's okay if you
drool, cause everybody's gonna strip/
and jump in the pool and
doowhutwelike." The follow-up is
whimsically titled "The Humpty
Dance," a shake-your-motorbooty
jam that fuses the identical functions
of funk and rap by burning one
almighty infectious groove into the
ground.
The DU's debut album is tenta-
tively titled Sex Packets, referring to
a new wonder drug that supposedly
simulates and/or stimulates orgasm.

"Witness" was the gleaming sil-
ver bullet of the concert. Peter Spar-
ling's use of 13 male dancers imbued
the work with a masculine texture
that vividly and emotionally com-
plemented the AIDS theme of the
work. The piece began simply and
elegantly with three brief solos, per-
formed with kinetic poignancy by
Matthew Rose, Bryan Jalowitz, and
Russell Constine. Accompanying
them, a lone viola (Ken Martinson)
played Persichetti's chilling Parable
XVI. In the second segment, the en-
tire group, in various states of sim-
ple dress, walked around the stage
with graceful authority and technical
control.
Sparling's simple movements
depicted a community always mov-
