ARTS Friday, January 12, 1990 The Michigan Daily Page 7 A town without pity (or jobs) R oger & Me dir. Michael Moore BY ALYSSA KA TZ Don't let all the hype put you .off: Roger & Me is an excellent, wildly entertaining film, a documen- :tary that, like Errol Morris' Th e Thin Blue Line, sends the genre off in new directions. Michael Moore, :the seemingly unassuming but devi- .ously vicious creator/protagonist of this film, takes the presumption that a documentary must present an ob- jective, unbiased account of a situa- tion and tosses it out the window. The Flint native makes it clear, from the mnoment he cranks up home movies of his childhood and talks in a voiceover about growing up in a family where everyone worked for General Motors, that he has a spe- cific, personal agenda: showing the world how GM's '80s Flint plant closings and the shifting of thou- sands of jobs to 70-cents-an-hour Mexico has devastated the city. Despite its depressing theme, Roger & Me isn't a doom 'n' gloom portrayal of the situation; in fact, it's truly funny and its rarely stable tone is most often ironic. Moore isn't afraid to make fun of people, and he doesn't limit himself to mocking Roger Smith, the chairman of GM and holy grail who Moore re- lentlessly seeks to interview. Every- one from earnest promoters of Flint tourism to seasonally color-coordi- nated Amway sales-women to Pat Boone, native son Bob Eubanks, and Miss Michigan Kaye Lani Rae Rafko is mercilessly embarrassed by Moore and his crew, who take all the moments that "nice" documentary filmmakers would have left on the cutting room floor and relish them, putting them right up front. The rich of Flint are made to look equally ridiculous - we get to see a "Great Gatsby" garden party for which unemployed auto workers have been charitably hired as human statues. The victims of the the plant clos- ings become the film's good guys, as they just try to exist day to day. The most striking of these is Rhoda See ROGER, page 9 ROOMMATES FEM.
