ARTS The Michigan Doily Friday, February 9, 1990 Page 5 Jazz band gives gift of BY KIM YAGED C ADEAU A Vous, Ann Arbor's premier jazz fusion group, will be the Bursley Show's house band for the fifth consecutive year. The show is sponsored by the Bursley Family, a minority organization that focuses on Black students. Anyone is eligi- enable minority students to visit the campus. Presently, the money goes to the Michael Griffith Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Black Stu- dents Emergency Loan Fund. Cadeau a Vous' origins are deeply rooted in the Bursley Show. The band formed in 1984 when Art Mc- Clellan and Dave Campbell met in McClellan explains how he and Campbell chose a name for the group: "We wanted to come up with something that people would re- member. It so happens that I was taking a French class at the time.... We opened up the French-English dictionary and tried to come up with something that would be catchy that people would remember." After six years and multiple staff changes, Cadeau A Vous continues to thrive. Presently, the band consists of McClellan on trumpet and fluegelhorn, Smith on bass, Gerard Gibbs on keyboards, Brian Johnson on drums, Traci Buckner on flute, and Steve Arrastia on saxophone. Gibbs does the majority of the com- posing with some help from Smith. They also do covers of tunes by popular artists like Sade and Quincy Jones or singles like "Feel Like Makin' Love." According to Smith, music every piece sounds different each time it is played. "We never play the same song twice," he said. The group's influences include Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Miles Davis and Marcus Miller, among others. Whether covers or originals, it is obvious this band simply enjoys playing. Last week they had a show at East Quad, where they jammed for hours. According to Gibbs, the group's goal is have their music reach everybody. Although they reap monetary rewards and publicity from performing in the Bursley Show, the band members say their primary mo- tive for participating is to raise money to bring more minority stu- dents to the campus. CADEAU d VOUS will perform at the Bursley Show in Bursley fall on Saturday, February 10th. The show begins at 7p.m. Cries and Whispers, one of Ingmar Bergman's later films, falls into his "chamber film" category. After his stagier productions, like The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, Bergman began to make films that closely studied a small group of characters and their interlocking relationships. Called chamber films because of their musical equivalents, they usually examine family relationships and how family determines character. Cries and Whispers delves into the warped psychologies of three sisters, reunited because of one sister's illness and death. Stuck together in a turn-of-the- century mansion decorated in red, the sisters clash and come to realize what they've become. In typical Bergman style, metaphors abound. Ultimately, Cries and Whispers examines the necessity to define one's own meaning for a life that can seem cruel and worthless. For those who read the Milan Kundera book, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, the film version may be a bit of a letdown. A film translation of the book's dreamy narrative style seemed impossible in reading the original, and indeed it was. The film version stands on its own, separated from the essence of the book but augmented by gently beautiful cinematography. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, the movie maps out the inability of one man to 764-0553 News 763-0379 Arts O o 764-0562 News and Opinion 74 -3 4News ; 630376 ports 763-259 Nes '74-3336 *port ouu bUY comp Ctompr utVAO Cadeau 6 Vous play jazz and Makin' Love." Still, the main intention of the Bursley Show is to showcase the talent of people of color. Kofi Malik Boone, president of the Bursley Family, explained the history of the Bursley Show. It was started 19 years agorby the Bursley Family in order to raise money to the Bursley library and decided to get together to play jazz. They acquired Darrian Smith and began practicing anywhere they could, including the Bursley prayer room. The band de- buted at the 1985 Bursley Show. In McClellan's words, "It was dark... then the lights came up and they were all standing there. It was sweet!" Since then, Cadeau aVous has been the show's house band. Read the Daily!
