ARTS Thursday, February 8, 1990 The Michigan Daily Page 7t '90s dances show signs of life BY JUSTINE UNATIN VITAL, from the Latin word vita, meaning life, describes this year's performance by the School of Dance with deliberately powerful ur- gency. Vital Elements: Dances for the 1990s mirrors life; it is not merely to be watched for entertain- ment, but experienced and reacted upon. According to Peter Sparling, chair of the dance department, the choreographers' goals in Vital Ele- ments culminated in the creation of metaphors which reflect "the ways dance can address real life while at the same time never diminishing the art." Programs distributed at the per- formance will supplement the metaphors with short explanations of the issues addressed in each dance. Furthermore, in order to familiarize the audience with the mode of com- munication utilized upon the stage, the choreographers will appear on a large movie screen discussing the conceptual and emotional aspects of dance. The elements which breath life into each piece vary visually, musi- cally, and thematically. Bill DeY- oung has created a piece titled "Ghost Dance" that presents a vision of primitive times, or a look at the future, depending on the viewer's imagination. Gay Delanghe ad- dresses a primitive theme in a differ- ent manner in "Humandinos" where spike-laden dinosaurs meet their inevitable demise. The verdant crea- tures display certain human qualities as a means of commenting on con- temporary threats of extinction. Linda Spriggs presents the real nuts and bolts of the program in an abstract piece entitled "Funi." The accompaniment consists of "prepared piano," created by composer John Cage and involves the use of various hardware to create a unique sound which perhaps even concert pianists would not attribute to the tool of their trade. A performance dedicated to the is- sues of the present day would not be complete without addressing AIDS. Thus, Sparling created "Witness," a "plea for understanding from all those who have dealt with the crisis of AIDS, from victims to loved ones." Unlike the other pieces, "Witness" is performed entirely by men. Jessica Fogel presents the fi- nale, titled "Connoisseurs of Chaos," depicting the evolving ideas of science, specifically the theory of See ELEMENTS, page 8 The members of Impact Dance Theatre (well, 12 of them here) support one another. Theatrical dance hits the floor BY AMI MEHTA "GOTTA dance!" Ardent dancers have thrown this phrase around at one point or another. But since all of us can't be dance majors, Impact Dance Theatre, a student-run and UAC-supported or- ganization, gives students outside of the dance school a chance to perform and trip the light fantastic. The troupe has been on campus for nearly 10 years and comprises 13 dancers this season. Once a dancer is in the troupe, having passed an audi- tion, he or she does not have to try out again. This method of selection allows the troupe to mix experience with fresh ability. Most performers stay with the group until they gradu- ate. Four-year veteran Lindsey Yea- ger tried out her first year and is now the co-producer of the company. She has seen the group mature and says, "The quality of the company has re- ally improved. We have a smaller and tighter group that is very com- mitted." Currently, all of the dancers are female, although males did audition. There is no limit to the number of people that can be in the troupe; the only factor determining selection is talent. And talent is something these dancers have, with an average of seven to 10 years of dancing experi- ence each. With all this savoir faire, the troupe does all of its own choreog- raphy. "We don't write away for a script like actors do. We make it up as we go along," says Yeager. Orig- inally, the intention was strictly to perform different dance styles but, according to Yeager, the show has evolved into a representation of the- atrical dance. Hence, the name Im- pact Dance Theatre. Showcasing modern dance, jazz, and creative expression, most of the pieces tell a story or set a tone. Set to music from James Taylor to live drum accompaniment, pieces range from a depiction of waiting for a New York subway to a number called "Nocturnal Wanderings," which unveils several imaginative sleeping positions. Since the show is totally student- run, it is essential that all the mem- bers of the company be able to work well together. Co-producers Yeager and Vivian Cleveland fit the bill per- fectly, having known each other since they were five years old. This strong sense of unity is passed on to the dancers as well, fostering cama- raderie, which is important with dance. "We really have a lot of fun doing this," Yeager says. "It's a huge endeavor to put on a show when you're a student but we are proud to do it." IMPACT DANCE THEATRE per- forms tonight through Saturday at 8. p.m. at the Mendelssohn Theatre. Tickets are $4 in advance at the Union; $4.50 at the door. Joy McEwan and Torya Beard become the Yin and the Yang in Linda Spriggs' "Funi," a selection from Vital Elements. .CLASIFIED ADS 764- 0557 GOING PLACES $99 ANYWHERE IN THE USA ON NORTHWEST airlines!
