Women's Basketball vs. Indiana Friday, 8 p.m. Crisler Arena SPORTS Hockey vs. Alaska-Anchorage Friday, 7:30 p.m. Yost Ice Arena The Michigan Daily .o- t' ..%'- Women end road woes with senior leadershi by John Niyo Daily Basketball Writer This weekend the women's basketball team returned home a winner from Champaign, Illinois. Forget that they lost by 25 points to Purdue on Friday night in West Lafayette. When Bud VanDeWege and his troops marched up the runway out of Assembly Hall to the team bus they were smiling from ear to ear. And they had good reason to smile. You see, Big Ten road wins and the Michigan Wolverines aren't usually * mentioned in the same breath. Except for when opposing coaches say, "Excellent. We have Michigan coming in this weekend. If we could only follow that victory up with some road wins we'd be doing great." Michigan's 5-13 conference record last year did not include a single win on the road. In fact, one has to go all the way back to a 86-77 victory over Minnesota on March 6, 1988, to find the last time the Wolverines returned from a road trip victorious. A pair of sophomores provided the spark that day with forward Leslie Spicer tossing in 21 points and another forward Tanya Powell scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Ironically, it was those two, now veteran seniors, that were on hand at the press conference after the Illinois game. The two took control of the game early on and then refused to let it slip away like it did in the last road contest, a 60-58 loss at Indiana. VanDeWege has long considered Powell his "star" and his leader. She and junior Carol Szczechowski are the team co-captains. Yesterday, she proved why. Powell set the tone in the first half, doing a little bit of everything. There were many occasions when she brought the ball up court, passed off to one of the guards and then posted up inside. She was a force in the paint tallying 21 points, most of them coming on moves in the lane and driving layups. Powell also took care of the rebounding chores. When center Val Hall, another senior who has been playing well lately, was forced to sit on the bench after picking up two quick fouls, Tanya filled the void with a game- high 11 rebounds. Spicer has established herself as the sparkplug for the Wolverines. Usually the first one off the bench, she provides a fine shooting touch and great defense. Michigan has won two of its last three, largely due to her play. In a big home upset of Michigan State she had 11 points and seven rebounds. Against the Illini she finished with a season-high 15 points. Tuesday, February 6, 1990 Page 7 Gymnasts split league tri- meet by Sarah Osburn Daily Sports Writer Mick Jagger isn't the only one with mixed emotions. The women's gymnastics team notched its first Big Ten victory over Iowa Friday night, but suffered its first Big Ten defeat to Michigan State in the same meet. The Spartans, who defeated Michigan, 181.95-179.1, took a lead of almost two points after two events and held on for the victory. Iowa finished third with a score of 176.1. Michigan State coach Jill Hough states that there was a definite determining factor in the meet. "Beam is very strong for Michigan State. We've hit six for six the last three meets so we are very confident on beam," Hough said. The Wolverines didn't fare quite as well on the balance beam where they scored a mere 44.45 points and had only two scores above a nine, much lower than their season average. The Wolverines best performance came on the floor exercise. Floor was their last event and they were already trailing by over two points, an amount almost impossible to make up on one event. However, the gymnasts did not let this effect their routines, recording scores of over 9.0 from all six competitors. Laura Lundbeck had the highest floor score in the meet with a 9.4, and Tina Blair had the third highest with a 9.2. Hough was impressed with the Wolverines performance on floor. "I thought the (floor routines) were very dynamic. I thought they were very well presented and they looked really wonderful." Michigan also scored five 9.Os out of six on the vault. Wolverine gymnast Diane Armanto scored a meet-high 9.35 and Laura Lundbeck had the second highest score on the team with a 9.1. Irish deviate from the CFA NEW YORK (AP) - Notre Dame bucked the College Football Association and became the first college to sell its home football games to a major network when it agreed Monday to a five-year contract with NBC that begins in 1991. ABC and ESPN thought they had acquired rights to Notre Dame home games when they agreed to exclusive contracts with the CFA, which consists of 64 schools. But the deal by the Fighting Irish, a member of the CFA, created the possibility that other colleges might defect from the CFA's package. ABC announced on Jan. 17 that it had purchased rights to the CFA for $210 million over five years. ESPN announced on Oct. 4, 1989, that it had bought the group's cable rights for $110 million over five years. I 4" Tuesday is 2.00 United Artists Day" All day Tuesday.
