Page 10 -The Michigan Daily -Friday, February 2, 1990 Tumblers face MSU and Iowa at Crisler by Sarah Osburn Daily Sports Writer Even though the Michigan women's gymnastics team has posted lower scores than both Iowa and Michigan State, they look to change that in today's home meet against the Hawkeyes and Spartans. ChristinerFurlong, who has slowly been returning to the line-up from a thumb injury, will vault to- day along with other teammates pre- paring for difficult vaults. "We are trying to upgrade (the routines) a little at a time, we're do- ing a little (upgrading) on vaulting. On bars we will do the same rou- tines but hopefully we'll hit them. We've been very successful on beam so far, so you know the saying, 'If it's not broken, don't fix it."' As for the intrastate rivalry, it ex- ists in gymnastics as well.- "They want to beat State just because they're State," Fry said, "just like every other Michigan team wants to beat State." While Michigan goes into the meet at 4-1, Michigan State's record is a deceptive 2-3, with their losses coming against highly ranked teams. Iowa is 2-1. Fry refuses to make any score projections: "The judges are going to want to make sure that they are very fair so I can't really predict a score1 but I am hoping that we will im- prove our score from Sunday's: meet." Women prepare to go the distance versus Michigan St. 'M' returns home after impressive trip by Eric Berkman Daily Sports Wrter If distance running were everything, the Michigan women's indoor track team would breeze through this weekend's meet at Michigan State. "Distance is sort of our strong point right now," assistant coach Sue Foster said. And it certainly is strong with Mindy Rowland and+ Molly McClimon leading the way. Last weekend at Eastern Michi- gan, Rowland qualified for the nationals in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16 minutes andl8 seconds. McClimon did well for herself too,J winning the invitational mile in a time of 4:52.46.t This weekend, Rowland will run the 3000 and McClimon will com- pete in the 800. After facing some of the nation's best teams in Texas and California, the Wolverines will be welcomed home tonight by the unde- feated Spartans of Michigan State. Michigan (7-2, 3-0 in conference) is coming off an impressive first- place finish in the Dallas Swim Classic, besting the U.S. National Team by nine points. The Spartans have enjoyed newfound success under head coach Richard Bader. "Well, they're 8 and 0 and defeated Minnesota at Christmas training," said Michigan assistant coach Mark Noetzel. "Bader has really built their program. They've certainly come a long way." Although the Spartans have yet to lose, their caliber of competition.0 has paled in comparison to Michi- gan's. Of course, emotions always run high in an interstate rivalry. "Michigan State has put together some pretty good times," Noetzel said. "There should be a lot of intensity." The Wolverines are confident, but not complacent. Coach Urbanchek may experiment with his lineup, placing some swimmers in some of 0 their weaker events. "Some swimmers willwbe swimming in off-events, but we're not looking to have much problem," said Noetzel. Michigan tackles Big Ten foes Indiana and Ohio State later this month, followed by the Michigan Open on February 24th and 25th. The Wolverines also look strong in the sprints with Rhonda Ricketts, and in the quarter mile with Diane Jenkins and Gillian Osborne. la addition, Lisa DeVries has a chance to qualify in the high jump and most competitive for us, as well as Toledo," Henry said. "We've seen them on and off the last couple of weeks and it's been nip and tuck in each event. And the fact that they're local makes it easier to compete without leaving the midwest" Michigan men' S track sprints into Michigan State Relays Women swimmers meet OSU, Minnesota by Eric Berkman Daily Sports Writer Continued progress is the issue as the Michigan men's indoor track team heads to East Lansing this weekend for the Michigan State Relays. "What we're looking for is continued improvement, times getting faster and jumps getting higher," head coach Jack Harvey said. Harvey feels optimistic after last week's perfor- mances at the Western Michigan Invitational in Kal- amazoo, where the Wolverines had several first-place ef- forts, including a 17-foot-2-inch leap by pole vaulter Brad Darr. "Even though Darr leaped only 17-2 last week, he had an excellent attempt at 17-8 which would have been an NCAA qualifier," Harvey said. "I do expect that he'll qualify, but I don't know when. Maybe this week, maybe not until the Big Ten." In addition to Darr, Harvey hopes for a strong showing from high jumper Brad Holwerda, who is coming off of a one week layoff, but the coach says that it is hard to do well at Michigan State. "It's tough to jump at MSU because the jumpers have to make their approach across the track while there are other races going on, so the jumpers have to stop and wait," Harvey explained. "I don't think there will be too many outstanding 'jumps, but whatever there is, Brad will be right in there." He is also curious as to how running back/sprinter Allen Jefferson will look in his first race of the year. "It's going to be interesting," Harvey said. "He hasn't been in a meet yet, so we're unsure how he'll do. He's not in great shape for running yet, so we probably won't see any great times for a couple ot weeks." Nonetheless, he remains confident: "Michigan State has two or three areas where they've got good athletes, but teamwise they're not as good as we are." by Jared Entin Daily Sports Writer The road to glory is paved as if it were the road to hell. At least such is the case for the women's swim- ming team. Actually, this weekend features not one but two dances with the devil for the Wolverines. Friday, Michigan will travel to Ohio State for an evening swim meet before returning to Michigan. The Wolverines will then head to Minnesota to swim against the Golden Gophers. Just because Michigan is looking ahead to the Big Ten championships doesn't mean coach Jim Richardson isn't aware of the talent he will see this weekend. Ohio State has the number one 200-yard backstroker, the number one and two 500 freestyler, and the number two 200 butterflyer in the conference. "It's good that we have to swim against such strong competition," Richardson said. "Just because we are going into taper (not practicing hard in order to rest), we don't want= to lose our aggressiveness. Nor, do we want to lose our intensity." Of course, Minnesota is no pushover. Among the Gophers are the number one 3-meter diver, num- ber two 1-meter diver, and the num- ber two 1000-yard freestyler in the Big Ten. As a team, Minnesota is 3- 1 in the Big Ten. Although many of Wolverines may agree with diver Amy Hansen, who said, "It's a bad case of very poor planning," Richardson hopes that this long weekend will be the final step in fine tuning the swim- mers for their goals, one of which is just two weeks away.
