Way of the

Triffids

Band M651 Triffid chats on a first-name basis

BY KIM YAGED

MOL Triffid, "the Metallica/Lou
Reed with a little bit of Bach and
God thrown in" band of Ann Arbor,
is blitzing through the music circuit.
They have just returned from a short
stint in Ohio where they were well
received, and they recently did a
show at Club Heidelberg that will
appear on The Simply You Show on
Ann Arbor's Community Access ca-
ble TV channel in February. Also,
they have plans to do some shows in
Windsor, where they are getting a lot
of support from local radio stations.
M61 Triffid emerged about a year
ago when drummer Jon, guitarist

Kimo, and bassist Dave decided to
get together for "good times and ex-
citement." The band's name was
coined by Dave when he had a vision
of the word appearing in the credits
of a Monty Python movie. Kimo
envisions Mdl Triffid as "a ro-
dent/space plant," while to Jon it is
more like "a mole coming out of its
hole with a plant sprouting out of
its back." The general consensus is,
however, that more than anything,
M61 Triffid is a feeling. Once they
tied down the name for the band,
they cajoled Kurt into doing vocals
for them and then unleashed them-
selves on the world.
Jon claims, with a smirk on his

face, that they are an "international
band." "Kimo is from Hawaii," says
Jon, "me and Dave are from the
same part of the woods (Detroit), and
Kurt is from Brighton, Michigan."
The music comes from Kimo,
Dave and Jon; Kurt writes the lyrics
to fit what the others create. Kimo is
the one who deemed it "a Metal-
lica/Lou Reed thing." But Dave
quips, "The wind whisking through
my window is what influences me."
The others in the band are quick to
indicate that Dave's windows proba-
bly do not actually open. A bigger
concern of his, however, is his cat
stealing his pot. Seriously speaking,
See MoL, page 8

Hey, guys, why so gloomy? The State of the Union address wasn't that depressing. Or did Dave's cat steal his
pot again? Well, at least the cat is happy, then.
