Page 14- The Michigan Daily -Wednesday, January31, 1990 Men swimmers top the best in the Dallas Swim Classic by Douglas Donaldson Daily Sports Writer When you've beaten the best, what else is there? That could very well be the feeling at Canham Natatorium this week, after the Michigan men's swim team outswam the U.S. National Team, while garnering first place honors in last weekend's Dallas Morning News Swim Classic. However, each team member could provide the same simple answer to the above question: an NCAA championship. The team has remained focused on this goal throughout the year, and have continued to view every victory as merely a step in achieving it. As the Wolverines enter the final third of the year, they have the luxury of spending the remainder of the schedule at home. Despite competing much of the past month in climates such as Florida, California, and Texas, the team is more than happy to be back in chilly Ann Arbor. "It's definitely good to be home," Coach Jon Urbanchek said. "We've been on the road since December 26, living out of a suitcase, and we really don't want to travel anymore." Competing in the Dallas invitational meet were six of the nation's finest swim teams, including Nebraska, SMU, Texas, UCLA, and the U.S. National Team. By finishing first, Michigan displayed both the talent and drive necessary to seriously compete in the quest for a national title. Spread out over two days, the meet consisted of 17 events. Michigan dominated from beginning to end, finishing with a score of 316. The U.S. National Team placed second (307), followed by Texas (297). As usual, the Wolverines were led by junior Mike Barrow-man, who continued his assault on swimming records across the nation. Friday, Barrowman swam to a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, with an NCAA-qualifying time of 55.59. On Saturday, he set a new meet and pool record in winning the 200-yard breaststroke. His time of 1:58.22 broke the record formerly held by 1984 U.S. Olympian Steve Lundquist. Barrowman also finished third in the 200-yard individual medley. All totaled, Barrowman tallied 47 individual points in pushing Michigan to the win. "It was a great victory," Urbanchek said. "We had a number of outstanding individual performances from Barrowman, Brent Lang and Eric Namesnik, who had a lifetime best time in the 500-yard freestyle." The Dallas meet marked the final time the Wolverines will compete on the road this season, with the importantO exception of the NCAA Championships in late March. All that remains on the Wolverines' dual meet schedule is three Big Ten conference meets, beginning with Michigan State this Friday. Michigan's Sean Higgins (24) and Terry Mills grab a rebound away from Michigan State forward Dwayne Stephens in Saturday's 65-63 Wolverine victory at Crisler Arena. Burton named CCHA SCORECARD BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK by Steven Cohen Daily Basketball Writer Minnesota's Willie Burton was named the Big Ten Player of the Week yesterday. The Detroit native had a 21 point, 10 rebound performance in a win over Iowa last Thursday and scored 22 points with 8 rebounds in a 108-87 victory over Indiana on Sunday. Minnesota, which has won four of its past five games but is winless on the road in conference play, now sports a 5-3 Big Ten record. BO, YOU'RE NOT ALONE: Illinois' assistant coach Jimmy Collins joined former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler by having a losing game dedicated to him. On Monday night, Iowa defeated Illinois 78-76 at home. Collins, the Illini's chief re- cruiter, was implicated by Iowa officials in a series of illegalities concerning the recruitment of prize first-year phenom Deon Thomas. Iowa assistant coach Bruce Player of Week Pearl had taped an interview between Thomas and himself in which Thomas allegedly indicated Illinois offered him $80,000 and a Chevrolet Blazer to suit up for the Illini. Thomas has been prohibited from playing this season by Illinois officials while Collins has not been allowed to recruit this season. "Sometimes you're going to want to win a game too badly," Collins said yesterday. I think they may have gotten up too much for that game, not to make excuses. I don't want them playing for me. I want them to play for themselves." In a front page story last week, the Chicago Tribune reported the "death penalty," athletic armageddon, may loom in the future for the Illini basketball program. "It has been very tough because we've been instructed by the NCAA and the university not to say anything," Pearl said. "So our side hasn't come out...But I have a feeling that justice will prevail."
