9 Page 6- The Michigart Daily - Sports Thursday- January 11, 1990 Bo and Co. stumble USC continued from page 1 considered again this year, had he played on the winning team. He finished the day gaining 108 yards on only 17 carries. Hoard's longest single effort, a 46 yard explosion in the second quarter, set up a 19-yard field goal by J.D. Carlson. But Carlson's score came with Michigan behind. Opening the second quarter, USC defensive lineman Dan Owens blocked a Chris Stapleton punt. Seau retrieved the bouncing ball and took it to the 11 yard line for the Trojans. "That was an individual breakdown," Schembechler said. "That was not even a block (coverage), they were in safe punt. That was one of the most ridiculous things to ever happen to a team. That should have been some indication, when that happened, we were not alert enough to win this game." Six plays and ten yards later, USC quarterback Todd Marinovich ran around his left tackle for a 1-yard touchdown. USC coach Larry Smith had actually called fullback Leroy Holt's name, but a miscue forced Marinovich to improvise. "Everyone thorght it was a fake, but it was a made up play," Marinovich said. "V41 n I looked up, Leroy was already by me." Marinovich could have easily taken the MVP honors. The redshirt frosh completed 22-of-31 passes for 178 yards, and opened the first half by completing 18-of-26 passes for 126 yards. Marinovich's air attack and Ervins' rushing pummelled the Wolverines in the first half, but the Trojans left the field leading only 10-3. Only the score was close, as USC dominatedthe Wolverines early. USC gained 239 total yards compared with Michigan's 127. "They ran the ball very well," Michigan defensive back Vada Murray said about the Trojans,"and they threw the ball very well. When it came down to third down, they were able to make the big play." USC coach Smith added:. "Offensively, we wanted to mix things up by throwing and running and we did both very well. We didn't get the big play but we didn't need it. You go for the big play and you can make a mistake. You can't make mistakes against Michigan, they're too good for that." Michigan opened the second half still looking lethargic, but on their second posession of the third quarter Hoard woke up his Wolverine teammates. Hoard took a hand off 31 yards to the USC 2 yard line. Tailback Allen Jefferson then scooted around the Wolverine line and into the corner of the end zone. The 10-10 tie held for most of the fourth quarter. Stapleton's 24- yard dash threatened to break the standstill. The fake would have put Michigan at the USC 30 yard line with 5:15 left in the game. Instead, the Wolverines had to punt. The Michigan defenders, who jumped for joy during Stapleton's scramble, now appeared emotionally flat as tIh>y prepared for action. Meti while, the USC offense enthusiastically trotted onto the field and put together their finest drive. The Trojans only scare came on a third-and-five play, but Marinovich turned the down into a highlight. Out of the shotgun, Marinovich found star receiver John Jackson matched up against Michigan linebacker J.J. Grant. Seeing the mismatch, Marinovich hit Jackson for a 20-yard gain to move to the Michigan 24 yard line. "I told the guys in the huddle that we didn't need to get it all in one shot," Marinovich said about -the final drive. "We just needed to work down the field and use the clock. The third-and-five to J.J. was obviously a big play for us. I was looking for J.J. all the way, andhe was there, just like he has been all year." The Trojans would have settled for a field goal, but Ervins broke into the open field for a 14-yard touchdown run, making the score 17-10. Michigan started a last gasp effort at their own 44 yard line, but quarterback Michael Taylor missed on three straight passes before being sacked on fourth down, securing the USC win. SCHRAGER continued from page 1 What every commentator who has commended Czubin fails to mention is that the flag was thrown after the play had already travelled 10-plus yards and more importantly that the player allegedly held, Trojan defensive back Bruce Luizzi, tackled Stapleton. Luizzi escaped the block, pursued the play, and subsequently made the tackle. Abrams could have used velcro to hold him better. In the 1979 Rose Bowl, the Wolverines were beaten by Southern Cal on what is commonly known as The Phantom Touchdown. Trojan running back Charles White leapt for the goal line and apparently fumbled before scoring but a touchdown was signaled and the Trojans eventually won. In this most recent Michigan loss, there was another questionable call concerning the marking of a fourth-down quarterback sneak by WANT TO REALLY BLOW THEM AWAY? Send a PERSONAL! The Daily Classifieds 764-0557 USC's Todd Marinovich. The offi- cials gave Marinovich an apparently generous spot and a first down which subsequently led to the Trojans first touchdown. Is apparently being overused? Unfortunately, viewers' second- guessing of officials' motivations and the use of the word apparently when discussing questionable calls is as common as skateboards in Ann Arbor. The best way for NCAA football officials to quell some of the criticism of bias would be to emulate their college basketball counterparts. Generally, interconference regu- lar-season basketball games are offi- ciated by people outside either conference, a requirement during the post-season -tournament. Because of the inherent bias, there are no Big Ten officials working tournament games with Big Ten teams. Until change is made, though, misery loves company and everyone will yearn for Jim Henson's loveable but clueless Swedish Chef to become an official at next year's Rose Bowl.
