Tuesday, January 30, 1990 Basketball vs. Purdue Tomorrow, 7:00 p.m. Crisler Arena Roberts by Peter Zellen Daily Hockey Writer scores big wit Rookie winger shocks team by leading in goals, assists Before the season Michigan hockey fans were expecting some big offensive performances from players like right winger Denny Felsner and center Mike Moes. What they weren't expecting was rookie David Roberts and his bag of tricks and surprises. Roberts has surprised Michigan fans with his tremendous production this season, leading the team in scoring with 16 goals and 23 assists. His teammates, however, were privy to what Roberts has accomplished. "We're not surprised at all," roommate David Harlock said. "He's a year older than the average freshman and could have played last year." What Harlock says is probably true. Roberts repeated his sophomore year in high school to get in another year of hockey at the Avon Old Farms prep school in Connecticut. Many hockey people feel that these extra years can be important to the growth and development of a player. Then along comes Roberts with another surprise. "I regret playing that extra year now. I wish I had just come here," the left winger said. "I went through a whole year and didn't improve. I was was just going through the motions my senior year. When Roberts chose Michigan over bigger hockey schools like Harvard, Wisconsin, and Maine, he experienced a different style of hockey than the kind he was used to in Connecticut. "It's a lot more physical here, a lot of clutch and grab. In the East, there's more finesse," Roberts said. This change in style caused Roberts to get off to a very slow start this season. He managed only one goal and five assists in Michigan's first 11 games. "Adjusting to the physical difference was hard, I came in a lot weaker and my skating skills weren't up to par," Roberts said. Yet, after those first 11 games the story took on a new angle. Roberts quickly began to put points on the scoreboard and fans had to start looking for No. 9 in their programs. "We notice David Roberts," coach Red Berenson said referring to Roberts' presence on the ice. "He may not stand out as a dominant h icers player, but he's consistent game in and game out. "We knew all along he had strong offensive skills and how well he could handle the intensity of this faster and physical game. He can play well everyday at this level." When asked if there is any added pressure or problems being a prolific scorer as a rookie, Roberts seems to take it all in stride. "I don't believe so. The team looks for leaders in the upperclassmen. My success is with my fellow freshmen," Roberts said. Berenson feels that Roberts can provide equal leadership just by showing good composure arid judgement during key game situations. Another element to his improved play is the fact that Roberts has been teamed up with center Mark Ouimet and right winger Ted Kramer. The three have played well together and See ROBERTS, Page 8 ROOMMATES 3 MORE RENTERS needed to fill our house on South Division. Parking, huge weight room and laundry incl. 769-8230. AVAIL.
