Michigan defenseman Alex Roberts sets his sights on the Ohio State goal during Saturday night's 3-3 tie at Yost Ice Arena. Buckeye goalie Todd Fanning was solid in goal, notching 36 saves on the evening, including several crucial stops in overtime. BUCKEYES *continued from page 1 Mike Moes, Roberts was in front of the net for the rebound and scored a decisive goal to put the game into overtime with 20 seconds to go. "Stoney (Don Stone) had the puck and his shot came off and rebounded and I tried to go to the far side with it. I guess I had some luck with me," Roberts said of his emotional goal. However, while Roberts' goal was able to provide the Wolverines with a tremendous amount of mo- mentum it was unable to lift them in the overtime, as both teams combined for only three shots in the period. Saturday night at Yost, Michigan had a 3-0 lead after two periods on goals by David Roberts, center Rob Brown, and Stone as the Wolverines took 27 shots and held Ohio State to 18. However, the third period was full of suspect minutes on the Mich- igan end. "I think we came out flat in the third," rookie defenseman David Har- lock said. "Instead of tightening our defense we opened up. The next thing we know is that we're getting stupid penalties and whoever scores the next goal has control of the game." Ohio State scored three un- answered goals in the third period as the Buckeyes tied it up 3-3. The third came on a 4-on-3 power play with both defensemen Alex Roberts and Mark Sorensen serving time in the penalty box. A major factor in the Buckeye comeback was the outstanding play of goalie Todd Fanning. "To be in a position to win a game where you're three goals down was because of him," Ohio State coach Jerry Welsh said. Fanning had 36 saves in the second game, including five in the overtime period. "Todd had an excep- tional game," goalie Warren Sharp- les said. "We had a lot of opp- ortunities when he was down and out, and he was on his stomach a lot but we just couldn't get the puck in the net." Berenson expressed his frustration with the series after Saturday's game: "We have to win. Ties aren't good enough.
