The Michigan Daily - Sports Monday- January 29, 1990 - Page 5 It's a Super Dud Super Bowl as San Fran maims Broncos NEW ORLEANS - In the more important game to most Michigan fans, Bud Light choked big time when it held a 34-30 lead and time running out. Bud grabbed a loose football and fell on it in the endzone giving Bud it's second straight Bud Bowl win. In that other game it was all San Francisco, who like Bud, won their second straight title. Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers proved yesterday that they have just one competitor - history. In the most dominant performance ever at a Super Bowl, the 49ers routed the Denver Broncos 55-10 to become the first repeat NFL champion in a decade and tie the Pittsburgh Steelers as a pinnace of Super Bowl perfection with wins in four tries. Montana had five touchdown passes, three to Jerry Rice, breaking Bud Light fumbles away Bud Bowl title a Super Bowl record for TD passes on a day on which he also set a record 13 straight completions. He also set five Super Bowl career records, including his third Super Bowl MVP award and San Francisco's point total was the most ever. Montana left the game with nearly 11 minutes to play. His final numbers: 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards. In four Super Bowls he has thrown 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. For Denver quarterback John Elway, it was a day of futility, ending with his third Super Bowl defeat. He missed eight of his first 10 passes and was intercepted twice and fumbled once. His final numbers: 10 of 26 for 108 yards. By halftime it was 27-3 as San Francisco was playing against the record book rather than the Broncos, who by then were doing just the reverse - tying a Super Bowl record for losses, 0-4, with the Minnesota Viking. With their third loss in four. years, the Broncos have now been outscored 13640. San Francisco was boringly perfect, doing more than even the experts who made them favorites by nearly two touchdowns after a 14-2 season and a waltz through the playoffs. The NFC has now won six straight Super Bowls. i . Or, more pre- cisely, blue and maize. The Michigan women's swim team blewinto East Lansing Friday night and proceeded to blow the Spartans away. And as with every contest between MSU and Michigan, spirit and intensity were high. "I told the team that I don't care if it's tiddledywinks or whatever, if you swim Michigan State and can't get excited about it, you've come to the wrong university," Michigan coach Jim Richardson said. "We were pumped for it," senior co-captain Amy Honig said. "A lot of people were tired because of what we're going through (in practice) with only three weeks left (until the Big Ten Championships). This is our last week of hard practice, but a lot of people just pushed through and gave it their all." One of those people was Gwen DeMaat, who achieved her lifetime best time in the 100-yard backstroke, an event she doesn't usually swim, with a time of 59.4 seconds. "We moved people around just to see what they could do," Richardson said. "There were a lot of best times." The Wolverines captured firsts and most seconds in every event but diving. State diver Julie Ferrell placed first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard competitions. Season bests also came from Stefanie Liebner in the 1,000 free- style and junior Molly Hegarty, w in n in g ahe r ese a so n mde b u t in ath e 2 0 0 butterfly. Distance swimmer Katherine Creighton seized victory in both her events: the 500 and 1,000 freestyles. Backstroker Lisa Anderson finished with a strong meet, winning the 200 backstroke, placing second in the 200 freestyle, and participating in the victorious 200 medley relay. Two of Anderson's teammates in the winning relay also captured firsts in their individual races: senior Jenn- ifer Eck in the 200 individual medley and sophomore Jennifer Love in the 50 freestyle. Michigan's stability this season has played a big part in keeping them on track for their ultimate Big Ten and NCAA Championship goals. "(This victory) is just consistent with what we've seen all season long," Richardson said. "We're swimming faster in season this year than we did last year and it's been the case meet after meet." They will have to hope that consistency holds when they face Ohio State and Minnesota on the road this weekend, two teams that have dominated Big Ten swimming in the 1980s. "We've got a stimulating week- end ahead of us with both meets on the road," Richardson concluded. -say hello to Franki 11- your choice for a quality, healthy LUNCH OR SUNDAY DINNER (5-8 PM) only at : AMERICAN SUBS Hamilton Square (Next to Supercuts and Alphagraphics) - 715 N.
