Same problems * give Blue a loss 'by Mike Gill Daily Basketball Writer BLOOMINGTON - A couple of resounding themes popped up in Michigan's 69-67 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers - foul trouble inside and losing a big lead. This time, it doomed(them. The Wolverines dropped a 20- point lead and, unlike against Duke and Seton Hall; were unable to recover. "That has been happening to us all year long and it's a thing we're going to have to take care of or it's 9 going to be a long season," Mich- igan senior forward Loy Vaught said. "It just seemed like in the second half we came out real cold. I can't determine what the reason is but nonetheless, we all just couldn't -shoot in the second half. They .Y-caught fire and they got momenturn -band it carried them the rest of the' way." Vaught fouled out with five seconds remaining after scoring 14 points and notching 10 rebounds. Center Terry Mills played only 12 minutes, scoring four points and grabbing three rebounds. He fouled -out with 6:13 to play. "You can't have Terry Mills play ;the way he played," Michigan coach "Steve Fisher said. "Eric Anderson ,was able to hang in and play with foul trouble and our guys weren't." 0 Anderson scored 17 points,' scooped 12 rebounds off the boards and dominated over Mils. He had three personal fouls at halftime. "Anderson played perhaps the best I've seen him play at the end," Hoosier coach Bobby Knight said. "Defensively, he did a very good job with four. minutes toplay." The Wolverines were embarrassing the Hoosiers in their conference home opener and Bobby Knight looked furious. When Michigan's Sean Higgins rebounded a Loy Vaught miss and made a put-back basket, Knight exploded. He believed that Higgins pushed-off on an Indiana player to get the rebound. He leaped off of the bench, with his arms flailing, and his voice audible across the court. He continued to protest the call on Michigan's next two trips down the floor. Then, during a Time out, he grabbed his son, an assistant on the bench, to give the ref an example of what he thought Higgins had done. The whole crowd watched this time out episode and they laughed. This was part of the show - Bobby Knight Theater. Later in the half, first-year guard Greg Graham was called for travelling. Knight berated his player all the way up the floor, pausing only to chip in "that was a horses--- call" to the referee. If he weren't Bobby Knight you would have felt sympathetic, or at least empathic, towards him. The Hoosiers had already lost to Ohio State in their conference opener and here they trailed a veteran Michigan team by twenty points only ten minutes into the game. But Bobby Knight doesn't ask for sympathy, even when eight of his top ten players are frosh and sophomores. Indiana cut the 20-point Michigan lead to 14 by the half. Equally importantly, Michigan's Loy Vaught and Terry Mills had two fouls each. Eric Riley, the insurance policy, went away with three. When Vaught and Mills each picked up their third fouls very early in the second half, it became a game. Then Michigan unravelled. Vaught and Mills moped around with incredulous looks of disbelief on their faces. As Mills appealed to the referee for a pushing call, the Hoosiers' Calbert Cheaney connected on a 17-foot basket over Mills. Michigan led only 42-35. When the Wolverines lost their morale, they lost their shooting touch. At one point Michigan missed 11 shots in a row. The streaky Higgins shivered, shooting an icy three-for-ten in the second half. Twice he put three point attempts off the backboard;missing the rim completely. The final one splattered off the backboard to the right of the rim with 13 seconds left as Michigan made a final effort to regain the lead. Michigan coach Steve Fisher admitted after the game "we lost our poise." That's half the story. The other half is that the Hoosiers didn't lose their's. Either the Wolverines have yet to shake their chronic under- achievement rap from the previous years, or the Big Tenhad better beware of Indiana for the next few seasons. Or both. 4 Demetrius Calip defends against Indiana guard Jamal Meeks in the first half of the Hoosiers' 69-67 victory in Bloomington Monday. INDIANA continued from page 1 Calbert Cheaney, who gave Indiana its first lead of the night by hitting both ends of a one-and-one from the line, scored 18 points, while Lyndon Jones had 20. Jones scored 14 points in the second half, including three key shots. With 6:30 to play, he hit a trey from the left baseline to cut the Wolverines lead to 64-61 and with only :40 left, he hit both ends of a bonus situation to give the Hoosiers their largest lead of the night at 69- 64. * Said Vaught of the run: "It just seemed we lost our concentration and became lackadaisical. They sensed that and took advantage of it and came out with a win because of it." While Michigan could not hit any of its shots in the stretch, Indiana found it was able to drive or find the open man on the outside -- usually Jones. "They just made a great run and we couldn't stop them," Rumeal Robinson said. The first half had everyone spellbound, as the Wolverines built a 33-13 lead with 9:29 left and headed to the lockerroom at halftime with a 40-26.advantage. Michigan appeared to be the veteran team that it is, while the young Hoosiers looked like the Little Sisters of the Poor might have caused them fits on this night. The Wolverines were able to control the tempo of the game - first, by running the break, then by using the clock. Michigan scored 21 fast break points in the first half as the Rumeal Robinson Show took over. Robinson scored 16 of his" game-high 21 points in the half, including an electrifying dunk early- on. "I thought in the first half . Michigan played extremely well on both ends," Indiana coach Bobby Knight said. The win was Knight's 228th in the Big Ten, tying him, with Purdue's Piggy Lambert as the' winningest coach in conference history. "At the half, we told our guys to play five minutes at a time, and we thought by doing that, we. would have a chance to be in the game with 10 minutes to play." No one jumped out any windows, but Michigan's dive in that 7:23 stretch must have sent Fisher into a Great Depression. r E i t w y t i AV WHAT'S HAPPENING NEED THESE? 0 RECREATIONAL SPORTS INTRAMURAL SPORTS BASKETBALL LEAGUES INSTANT SCHEDULING SIGN-UPS MON., JANUARY 15 AND TUES., JANUARY 16 11:00AM - 4:30PM INTRAMURAL SPORTS BUILDING INTRAMURAL SPORTS BASKETBALL OFFICIALS NEEDED $4.80/HR FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING WE WILL TRAIN!
