December 30, 1989 Michigan 107 Eastern Michigan 83 The Wolverines closed out their non-conference schedule with an easy win against their Washtenaw County rivals, 107-83. Mike Griffin sat out the game nursing an injury to his non-shooting left hand but Michael Talley and Demetrius Calip rose to the occassion. Talley, making his first collegiate start, tallied 11 points and Calip came off the bench to score 20 points as the Wolverines looked forward to a week off before their next game in Bloomington. -By Daily Basketball Writer Mike Gill Men's Swimming The Michigan men's swim team returned Tuesday from a two-week stay in Baca Raton, Florida. The trip hardly qualified as a "vacation," however. As head coach Jon Urbanchek said, "We weren't sight- seeing." The focus of the trip was an intense training camp, which culminated with the Mission Bay Invitational Meet last weekend. The practice nature of the camp was emphasized by not keeping scores during the final meet. "The competition wasn't that important," Urbanchek explained.* "But the training was excellent, and the team was tremendously enthusiastic." -By Daily Sports Writer Douglas Donaldson JOSE JUAREZDaily The Michigan hockey team hoists its Great Lakes Invitational trophy after defeating Michigan State, 6-3, in the championship game. On December 28-29, Michigan co-hosted the Great Lakes Invitaional tournament at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. After beating Northern Michigan 7-1, the Wolverines upset the then top-ranked team in the country, Michigan State, 6-3, in the championship. Four Wolverines were named to the All-Tournament team. Frosh forwards David Roberts and Mike Ouimet, senior defenseman Todd Copeland, and goaltender Warren Sharples - who was named tournament MVP. Sharples performance earned him co-CCHA Player of the Week with Miami forward Craig Fisher. Denny Felsner suffered a knee injury against Northern Michigan and missed the championship game and the series against the Lakers. He is doubtful for this weekend's series against Bowling Green. Don Stone reached the 100-point plateau at Michigan by scoring two goals and two assists in the tourney. Complete Daily Sports Coverage of the GLI is on page 8. On December 15-16, the Wolverines swept a pair of games from the University of Illinois-Chicago, posting 6-3 and 13-4 wins respectively. Sophomore Denny Felsner and frosh David Roberts each collected five points in the 13-4 pasting, as Michigan gained its 900th win in 68 years of varsity hockey competition. Felsner's weekend performance earned him CCHA Player-of-the-Week honors. Also, before Big Ten action opened the Wolverines ran their non- conference record to 10-1, notching victories over Marquette, Seton Hall, Northern Michigan and Eastern Michigan. A quick summary: December 16, 1989 Michigan 82 Marquette 73. Center Terry Mills scored a career high 31 points to lead the Wolverines to a 82-73 victory over the Marquette Warriors at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconson. Mills superior offensive performance was enough to hold off a late Warrior rally as he hit on 13 of 22 shots and contributed nine rebounds. "He was sensational," Michigan coach Steve Fisher said. December 23, 1989 Michigan 91 Seton Hall 86 In Las Vegas, they termed it "The Duel in the Desert," a rematch of last year's thrilling national championship game. Seton Hall though is a different team, with a new starting lineup. Michigan looks the same this year, minus Glen Rice. And the game looked the same too. After Michigan took an early lead, Seton Hall fought back and grabbed a lead of its own. But the Wolverines stymied any hopes of an upset, and turned away The Hall, 91-86. December 28, 1989 Michigan 102 Northern Michigan 74 Michigan ran its unbeaten string to nine with an easy 102-74 wire over Division II school Northern Michigan at Crisler Arena. However, Michigan did watch a 22-point lead sink to 12 with 8:36 left before again turning on the after-burners. Loy Vaught led the Wolverines with 20 points. Terry Mills had 18. 0 Wolverine guard Tempie Brown works the ball against Minnesota en route to a 70-53 victory over the Gophers. Michigan dropped its next contest 65-54, to Iowa, splitting its Big Ten homestand.
