Michigan pulled away from a 9-9 tie with the Spartans at the halfway point, to up its Big Ten dual meet record to 3-0. Both coaches and players agreed that the pivotal match occurred in the 167-pound class, where Mich- igan first-year redshirt Lanny Green defeated Roy Hall, 4-1. "The key match was Green's - no doubt about it," co-captain Fritz Lehrke said. "(Sam) Amine's win was big, but Lanny's sealed it up." Tied with Hall in the third period, Green scored a takedown to make the score 3-1, which, combined with a substantial riding time advantage, resulted in a 4-1, decision for the Wolverines. "Lanny really gutted it out, and it really turned the momentum of the match," Spartan coach Phil Parker said. Michigan coach Dale Bahr agreed. "Green turned the tide, and gave Justin (Spewock) an impetus to do well," he said Spewock (177) followed suit with a 10-2 victory over junior Jamie Richardson. Though Spewock led 7-2 heading into the third period, the score did not reflect how close the match actually was. In the final minute of action, Spewock turned Richardson on his back, scoring a near fall. The match ended with Spewock still trying to by Theodore Cox Daily Sports Writer The Michigan athletic admini- stration will begin interviewing prospective volleyball coaches in the upcoming weeks. The job was vacated after Joyce Davis resigned December 4th and the athletic board is clearly stating that a decision has not been made. Interim athletic director Jack Weidenbach and the associate director of women's athletics, Phyllis Ocker have stated that they are committed to finding a quality coach. They will have to weed through the fifty or so applications they have received. The application deadline was January 15. . Prospective coaches from every- where in the nation have shown interest in the job. Michigan has received resumes from coaches in. California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and even one from Nebraska. The athletic board is hoping they will have someone named by February so the new coach will have a chance to be a part of the recruiting process. The volleyball team has not posted a winning record since 1984, and has never finished above .500 against the other Big Ten Teams. Under Davis, Michigan compiled an* overall record of 50-83 over four seasons. More disappointing was her conference record of 8-64, including a 1-17 finish this year. CCHA SCORECARD Michigan wrestler Joey Gilbert (bottom) prepares to flip Pete Schulte of MSU early in last night's match. Gilbert won 10-4 as the Wolverines defeated the Spartans 25-12. pin his opponent, instead recording a major decision. "My concentration was a lot bet- ter tonight," Spewock said. "(Grad- uate Assistant) Bill (Elbin) kept telling me before the match 'Focus', because that's been my main problem all season." Sparking the Wolverine runaway was Amine (158), who notched his team-leading 13th fall of the season with a 15-0 technical fall over Mike Krause. Amine boosted his record to 26-3-1, 5-0-1 in dual meets. "I knew we needed points, so I just went in there and pounded him," Amine said. Also posting impressive victories were Joey Gilbert (134) and Lehrke (190), who remained the only two Wolverines with perfect dual meet records, each at 7-0. Lehrke (26-6 overall), continued his pummelling of Big Ten oppon- ents with a 15-2 major decision over Mark Zenas. In three Big Ten meets, the 190-pound co-captain boasts two major decisions and a pin. "Fritz is always a mauler, and to- night was no different," Parker said. "I like his style." Gilbert remained unblemished by trouncing Pete Schulte, 10-4. The standout frosh upped his overall rec- ord to 29-5, holding the most wins of any Wolverine, and drawing praise from Parker. "By my estimation, Gilbert's an all-American this year," the Spartan coach said. In a mild surprise, true frosh Greg Jackson (150) battled Wolver- ine all-American Larry Gotcher to a 2-2 draw. "If Green was (Michigan's) top guy, I'd have to say our most val- uable guy was definitely Jackson," Parker said.
