The Michigan Daily - Sports Monday - December 4, 1989 - Page 5 D- - Icers take two at Yost, 'steamroll' over BU by David Hyman Daily Hockey Writer The tenth-ranked Michigan hockey team was aware that if it wants to continue its post season past the CCHA playoffs and into the NCAAs, the Wolverines needed resounding efforts this weekend against ninth-ranked Boston University. With two back-to-back strong third periods, the Wolverines (10-5-1 overall, 8-5-1 CCHA) disposed of the Terriers (6-4-1) and gained some needed momentum and confidence going into their upcoming weekend series with Michigan State. "It is important for us for national recognition beating Boston University," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "It was an important test for us tonight." This series was important because of the ten teams ahead of the Wolverines, Michigan only faces conference foes Lake Superior (1st) and *Michigan State (3rd) the rest of the season. By sweeping a team ahead of them in the national rankings, Michigan did itself a great service. "We're so close in the rankings and this (series) was important," Michigan center Mike Moes said. "If we want to be the team we want to be, these are the teams we need to beat." And the Wolverines responded with two of its best efforts of the season, especially improving its play in the third period, to sweep BU. The Terriers entered Yost outscoring its opponents, 13-3, in the final 20 minutes of play, whereas Michigan had been outscored, 17-10, in the final period. BU also entered with a low 2.85 goals against average. Ironically indeed, the two teams switched positions as the Wolverines exploded, scoring five third period goals in the series. TERRIERS Continued from page 1 Roberts' second goal in the game, which would prove to be the game winner. The Wolverines were playing the puck down low towards the goal when Felsner took the shot. Boston goalie John Bradley deflected it but a melee ensued for, the loose puck. As it landed in front of Roberts he was able to put it in for the score. While senior Alex Roberts was the offensive force for Michigan in the first game, his cousin, rookie defenseman David Roberts was the straw that stirred the drink in the second game. David had two goals and one assist in the second game and feels that he's recently been playing some of his best hockey. "I think I'm getting a little more used to this league now," David said. "Earlier in the season I was missing a lot of chances, but I'm a little more confident now." In fact, the whole line that David plays with, including right winger Ted Kramer and center Mike Moes, played well, as all three combined for the winning goal in the second game. "Hockey's a funny thing because a team can change so fast," Moes said. "You can put everything together one minute and two seconds later they could score on you." But everything was in Michigan's favor at the start of the third period. With the score tied 2-2 Moes put Michigan ahead to stay after eight seconds. "We won the draw and held up the forwards. (David) Roberts made the pass to Kramer creating a 3-on-2. He shot the puck and it got deflected and came down from the air. It landed by me so I scored with it," co-captain Moes said as he described the action. That goal was the first of four for Michigan that period as Michigan held the Terriers to four shots in the third. David Roberts contributed another goal, only 2:04 after Moes' goal. "Those early goals in the first minutes are huge," Berenson said. "We got the early goal and it gave gave us the momentum as each team is teetering on a win or a loss. We put good pressure on them in the third (23 shots) and it's about time we had a convincing third period." After the series, the players appeared more confident in themselves and feel that the team is playing a more consistent style of hockey. "Coach (Berenson) always says he wants to activate our game on the rush. When the play goes up the ice then that's where we want our men to be. It was a good series because we had control of our men," frosh defenseman Patrick Neaton said. "Each week we start to gel better. Theanine seniors make the freshmen feel part of the team and we're all playing better." Boston coach Jack Parker described the series best after the second game when he told reporters, "Michigan didn't beat us, they steamrolled us." "It was probably our best third period," Berenson said after four unanswered Michigan third period goals Saturday evening, breaking a 2- deadlock. "It's about time we had a convincing third period. Not one that was debatable." We Showed we can play with the top teams and this is a great confidence booster. - Alex Roberts JOSE JUAREZ/Daily Michigan's Ryan Pardoski tries to get the upper hand against a Boston opponent during the Wolverines' 4-3 victory, the first win of the weekend sweep, Friday night at Yost Ice Arena. Wolverine right winger Ryan Pardoski agreed. "We knew we could do it in the third, but before it was doubtful." Michigan and BU were tied, 2-2, as the teams took the ice for the final 20 minutes. The Wolverines lit the scoreboard on Moes' first goal only eight seconds into the period. Three more Michigan goals (left winger David Roberts, Moes and right winger Ted Kramer) sealed the win. When asked what happened when Michigan exploded in the third, a bewildered Terrier coach Jack Parker said, "They steamrolled us. I think Michigan played outstanding - either up to their capabilities or past it. And we got brought down to earth." The third period also proved to be a decisive one in Friday's contest. The Wolverines held a 3-2 lead before BU tied the score only 3:18 into the third. But Michigan responded 6:16 later on Alex Roberts' goal and shut down the Terriers the rest of the way. "I thought it was a good 60 minutes and a good team effort," Berenson said. "We've had some good third periods and this was the kind of game you have to know how to win." But to understand how important this series was, all one needed to do was speak to a few players after Friday's triumph. "We're satisfied with tonight, but not with the weekend, yet," goalie Sharples said. Teammate Moes agreed. "If we come up with a poor effort tomorrow, it (the opportunity to sweep a top ranked-team) will be out the door." Therefore, the Wolverines were not ready to rest on their laurels of Friday until they swept the team from Beantown. "We knew that we would have to play anotherfull 60 minutes," Alex Roberts responded. Playing another full 60 minutes, the Wolverines gained needed momentum and confidence heading into this weekend's showdown with Michigan State. "We showed we can play with the top teams and this is a great confidence booster," Alex Roberts said. Kramer agreed. "This was a 120 minute weekend. We knew this would be an important series for the NCAAs and we knew that if we could stay close, we could win." Berenson looked ahead to next week's contest. "This is the kind of hockey we're going to have to play against a top team like Michigan State." BU posed a challenge to the Wolverines, but Michigan responded with decisive back-to-back wins. "I knew we would be tested and I wasn't disappointed," he said. Hated Batman? Loved Bernstein?
