Wrestlemania hit the Sports
Coliseum Thursday night when the
finals of the IM wrestling tourna-
ment took place. Over 250 wrestlers
squared off in the three-day competi-
tion, and Phi Delta Theta emerged as
the winner, with three first-place
finishes.
"I think this tournament is a hell
of a lot more competitive than
people think," said Phi Delt's Matt
Schwartz after he pinned Alpha Tau
Omega's Dave Sachs two minutes
and four seconds into their bout, to
win the 145-pound class. Schwartz,
who wrestled for three years in high
school, said that his strategy was to
"just try to keep from throwing up."
David Schultz of Kappa Sigma,
the winner in the 138-pound class,
seemed to agree. He considered his
opponent in the finals "the best guy
I've wrestled so far. This guy was a
freshman and was really on top of
his game.
"There were a lot of good guys in
this tournament," explained Schultz,
who finished third in the state of

Connecticut his senior year in high
school. "But a lot depends on your
weight class. Some guys have a hard
time because of the draw, some can
walk right through."
Phi Delt's Bill Harris, who won
the 191-pound bracket with an 8-5
decision over Craig Linne of Delta
Sigma Phi, noticed an overall im-
provement in the caliber of the tour-
nament. "The wrestling was a lot
better this year," Harris said, at-
tributing the improvement to "more
(competitive) wrestlers."
"I will never, ever do this again,"
Sigma Alpha Epsilon's Mike Ham-
mer huffed shortly after his victory
over Alpha Delta Phi's Blake Flood
in a rematch of last year's heavy-
weight final. "Blake's improved a lot
over last year. I was surprised. He's
more conservative."
As for the overall quality of the
tournament, Hammer commented
that, "Anyone can win if they know
a little about wrestling and they are
in shape." Hammer added, however,
that he was "probably the most out-
of-shape person in the tournament."

Experience plays key
role in tournament

Last Thursday's IM Wrestling
Championships for the Ali-campus
and Residential halls was dominated
by one word - experience.
Todd Petraro, representing the
South Quad's Hunt hail, agreed. Of
his victory over Todd Price in the
145-pound division, Petraro said: "he
was pretty strong, but I was able to
overcome it with my experience."
Petraro, who pinned his first two
opponents, decisioned Price 15-4.
Jamie McNaughten, who
originally came to Michigan on a
wrestling scholarship, but was forced
to cease wrestling on the collegiate
level when he sustained a neck
injury, also cited experience as the

main reason for his victories.
"I've basically been wrestling
since I was 4 years old," he said.
MeNaughten defeated Tom Frank 6-
2, in the 152-159 All-campus
division, using his experience to
out-manuever a slightly stronger and
heavier Frank.
In the 152-159 All-campus
finals, McNaughten faced twenty-
seven year old Keith Allman,
McNaughten's elder by two years.
He defeated Allman 11-3, again
relying on his vast amount of
experience and thus adding to
McNaughten's mantle the IM
Championship award, which will sit
next to his Michigan State High
school Championship trophy.

the Michigan scoring attack with 13
and 14 points respectively.
"There were a few exceptions
about readiness to play and people
that performed well," VanDeWege
said. "Carol was one of those people
who stepped forward and gave us a
performance that helped put us over
the top. Tonya and Carol are two
people who at least, if the team
hasn't shown up to play, can
generate something positive out
there."
While the real Michigan team
might not have shown up, they did
break out of their shell a few times
on Sunday. Steals and turnovers
forced by their defense sparked a 17-4
run at the end of the first half that
slammed the door closed on any
victory hopes that Akron might have
had.
"We put on a full court press at
times and it was thoroughly
ineffective," VanDeWege said. "I
think it just caught them at the right
time. Fortunately, it got us some
turnovers and gener-ated the
momentum for us."
Starting with five minutes left in
the half, with Michigan up 23-20,
senior forward Leslie Spicer made
her presence felt. She scored ten of

her eleven points during that period,
including three straight baskets on
breakaways. But even Spicer wasn't
pleased with the overall team
performance.
"I don't think a lot of us came to
play," Spicer said. "I think
physically we were here, but
mentally something lapsed. We
missed a lot of layups. The shots
were all there. In the first half we
missed a lot of jump shots, too. I
don't know what that was. I can't
explain it."
Michigan again fell back into a
rut in the second half. The Lady Zips
took advantage of poor rebounding
by the Wolverines (they out-
rebounded Michigan 49-34 despite a
tremendous size disadvantage) and
kept them from making the game a
complete runaway. In fact Akron
outscored Michigan 37-36 in the
second half as they improved their
shooting percentage consider-ably,
from 37.5% to 46.8% and finished at
42.9% overall. Michigan shot
44.4% for the game.
"One of our goals was to put
teams away when we can,"
Szczechowski said. "This is cne
team we felt t:at we should have
been able to put away and we didn't
today. So we're disappointed and we
know we've got to work hard to
come back against Western
Michigan."

This man is carried away after a physical dispute with the Griddes board
over his failure to pick the correct outcome of the games of powerhouse
squads Slippery Rock and Indiana(Pa.).
"It's just not fair," he cried as the Griddes Ruling Council swatted down
his worthless protests and beat him to a bloody pulp. He claimed Slippery
Rock and Indiana(Pa.) were not worthwhile squads to exist, let alone be
included in a prominent sports tradition like Griddes.
But thankfully neither team qualified for a bowl game of any sort so he
has decided to continue Griddes play in the Bowl edition trying for the free
dinner at O'Sullivan's Eatery and Pub.
Turn in your bowl picks at 420 Maynard by Dec. 12th at 5 pm. The
California Bowl, since it occurs Dec. 9th, will be excluded from Griddes
bowl edition play.
