CHERRY
Continued from page 8
In his current home base of San
Francisco, Cherry's musical pursuits
include work with a big band called
the Hieroglyphics Ensemble. In addi-
tion to his solo career, Cherry is
also known for his work with New
and Old Dreams, a quartet that was
dedicated to the forewarding of the
Coleman quartet's free jazz visions.
Cherry will present his version of
barrier-banning jazz tomorrow night
at the Ark° in a duet format with
drummer Ed Blackwell. Blackwell's
complex, multi-influenced, interna-
tionally-flavored rhythms have been
heard on several collaborations with
Cherry, including work with the
Coleman quartet as well as Old and
New Dreams. Blackwell's tour
itinerary has been limited in recent

years due to his bout with kidney
disease, but a turnaround in his
health has allowed him to reunite
with his old bandmate for another
free jazz venture.
Although Cherry's trademark is
his pocket trumpet, a scaled-downed
version of the original, his sound
looms large and it may have been
this distinction which prompted
Coleman to dub Cherry "The Pied
Piper." Coleman is no stranger to
toy instruments himself; the two
were known to perform using the
pocket trumpet and a plastic sax.
This does not (necessarily) mean
Blackwell plans to utilize coffee cans
and spoons as tools of choice, how-
ever. Rather, the drummer makes use
of a wide range of percussion in-
struments to create sounds which
draw the music back to its African
roots.

It was in 1959 that Coleman and
Cherry brought forth their African
sounds for The Shape of Jazz to
Come. Thirty years later, Art Deco
plus, perhaps, a night at the Ark can
prove that Cherry knows how to
keep it coming.
DON CHERRY and ED BLACK-
WELL will perform at 8 and 10 p.m.
at the Ark. Tickets are $12.50, stu-
dents $10. Saturday's cheaper
venue is the Michigan Union Kuen-
zel room, where the artists will hold
a workshop at 3 p.m.

COMPANY

to a drug that makes people feel
good without side effects," said
Hughes. And the cast and crew of
the Comedy Company would like to
share their drug of laughter and tickle
the funny bone that every person has
before it becomes numb from study-
ing.
THE COMEDY COMPANY will
perform BEDTIME FOR BIG
SHOW at the Mendelssohn Theatre
in the League tonight and tomorrow
at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at
the Union Ticket Office.
