Page 10-The Michigan Daily-Thursday, November 30, 1989 Icer by Peter Zellen Daily Hockey Writer Roberts leads by example Three years ago, people around the Michigan hockey team never thought highly of Alex Roberts. "People would ask how Michigan could recruit someone like Alex Roberts," coach Red Berenson said referring to the defender's play during his rookie year. "Some thought he'd be the least likely to be a leader." However, times have changed for the senior co-captain as his play and performance have drastically improved. "The biggest change was mostly my attitude," Roberts said. "When you're young you think you're good, but you're not. In high school, I got by on talent alone but when you get here you're just one of 25 hockey players." Roberts admits that his attitude and work ethic were less than admirable when he first arrived at Michigan and it showed on the ice. Roberts scored only one goal and seven assists that year while racking up 55 penalties for 117 minutes. The Bloomfield Hills native became aware after his first season that he was not guaranteed a spot on the following year's squad and was determined to remedy the situation during the summer before his sophomore year. "I worked hard that summer and developed a positive attitude. I had a lot of confidence and felt better," Roberts said. Roberts increased his offense with four goals and nine assists and cut his penalties down by a third, but more importantly played a better defensive game in that sophomore season. "He's karned from his mistakes and other people's mistakes and he's learned to control his emotions," Berenson said of Roberts' improvement. Another factor in his improvement over the last two seasons stemmed from a strong influence by older players on the team. During his first year, Jeff Norton played mentor to Roberts. Then, after Norton left, defenseman Myles O'Connor took Roberts under his wing. Roberts moved in with O'Connor last year and has been grateful for his help. "He helped me out a lot with my game, school and my off ice habits," Roberts said. "Everything fell together last year, on and off the ice." In his junior season, Roberts had a career high 19 assists and showed a penchant for both the power play and penalty killing units with Berenson using him accordingly. "Right now he's our best defensive defenseman and he's created some offensive opportunities. He's come along as one of the team's most consistent workers," said Berenson. While once it was Roberts who needed tutelage from the older players, he has now become one of the elder statesmen on the Michigan hockey team. As a newcomc , Do t, Lt. .. had a shaky start on defense last year but was calmed down after teaming up with Roberts. "Last year I was inconsistent, but he's rubbed off on me," Evans said. "We work well together and I learned a great deal from him." This weekend Roberts will encounter the same task, teaming up with junior Mark Sorenson. Sorenson has been playing left wing all this season and is now returning to defense, his former position. "The coach is showing confidence in me in trying to help other people out," Roberts said. "Mark needs to get his confidence back because he wants to come in and contribute." And with a change welcomed by players, coaches, and fans alike, Alex Roberts has been transformed from a troubled youngster to a defensive sage. Wolverine defenseman Alex Roberts shows his puck-handling abilities. In his four years, he has transformed from a player who saw little action to a co-captain of the team. The high scoring Wolverines and Hurons have each averaged more than eighty points per game thus far. "Eastern comes at you," said Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege. "They are going to force you to do things quickly and in a hurry. They gamble, they go for steals, they're going to make you shoot quickly. If you capitalize and do score off those opportunities, then you have the potential to score a lot of points. But they do too." The Wolverines will also gamble on defense by running the full court press throughout the game. Mich- igan's biggest advantage comes from their bench. The Wolverines have nine players that will be rotated into the line-up. "We like to play full court defense," VanDeWege said. "It wears down both teams, but that is where our bench strength helps. Hopefully we won't lose anything when we go to the bench. Teams that are deep should be playing that type of defense." Michigan's biggest concern will be hanging onto the ball. The team had 23 turnovers in their first game Tuesday night against Youngstown State's pressure. "Eastern's going to be a better team," said Wolverine point guard Carol Szczechowski. "We're going to have to work harder. I think after everyone calmed down we were O.K. (against Youngstown). I'm not worried if we can pull together quicker." Another Wolverine concern will be containing the Huron's senior forward Kelly Hebler and point guard Latonya Watson. Both are good shooters, and Watson is solid from beyond the three point line. 4 "This will be a dogfight," VanDeWege said. "Eastern is a very competitive team and they really come at you with excellent defensive pressures." Joining Carol Szczechowski, Val Hall, and Tanya Powell in the starting line-up that will first test the Huron defense will be Char Durand and Joan Rieger.
