on my way to Colorado and some
friends of mine lived in Ann Arbor
and I used that as my half-way spot,
so they took ine over there one
night. I think I got up and mumbled
my name and sang a song and ran off
the stage.
D: What song was it?
MCC: I have no idea, it was so long
ago. 1976, 1 think.
D: I was really excited to learn you
sang a Tom Waits song on your first
album, hometown Girt. Pretty ob-
} viously you listen to a lot of music

besides Country. What other song-
writers do you like?
MCC: There's so many. Elvis Cost-
ello, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson,
Steve Forbert, Guy Clark, The
Beatles... Joan Armatrading, Maria
McKee, I love... God, what's her
name? Aimee Mann from 'Til
Tuesday. Lucinda Williams is won-
derful. I love a lot of stuff.
D: I think "This Shirt" is great - I
like the way you take a really small
object, and you build a whole story
out of it.
MCC: Yes, it's The Shirt as Meta-
phor.
D: Sounds like a good topic for an
English paper. But I want to get

back to your autobiographical lyrics.
You've said, "I've never really been
able to make up something, like a
person or a love story." Is there re-
ally enough in your life to always
have something to write about?
MCC: Yes, I think you find things
over the course of your life - if I
may sound obnoxious here - the
details of which are not lost. You
constantly look over your life; you
examine your motives. You remem-
ber people. You can write a song
about a person and then years later
write another song about the same
person, about a different experience
that you had. There's a friend of
mine whose music I highly recom-
