Although she is tough around the basket, playing further out will allow her to utilize her skills even better and help take some of the scoring load off of Brown. "Tempie Brown is definitely going to be counted on-to do some consistent scoring, but Tanya Powell is really the sleeper of the Big Ten. I think she is really, in all honesty, one of the finest forwards in the league right now.. Playing more on the perimeter she has been spectacular and I see her as being a real force in the league. Those two, I think, are a great one-two punch," VanDeWege said. Szczechowski added, "(Powell is) a really good role model for everyone. She really works hard and never gives up." Others in the Big Tennalong with VanDeWege, expect big results from this year's Wolverine squad. "I know they played very strongly towards the end of last season. They'll be much improved and should challenge some of the upper division teams. They should be very competitive," said Lin Dunn, the coach of perennial Big Ten power Purdue. VanDeWege explains, "I expect a better team. There isn't any question that we'are better at this point (than last season).. . think it's very realistic to be an upper division team. Any time you're an upper division team in a powerful league like the Big Ten you have to consider it a chance to get in the NCAA (tournament)." "I think we're going to be really good and if winning the Big Ten was ever in my mind, it's this year," Szczechowski said. "If we play as we're capable of, we'll (be in the conference's upper division), but if we don't, we'll get our butts kicked. Powell added: "Realistically I think we have a chance of being in the (conference's) Top 3. We want to make the tournament." Mike Gill GilAgai Pressure hangs from title banner on Steve Fisher Billy Joel sang about it, and like it or not, Steve Fisher has it. Pressure. After they raise the national championship banner at Crisler Arena it will stare down at Fisher like an imposing big brother's eye. It will remind everyone of the past, of that magical Cinderella ride on which Fisher placed his team. But it will also be a banner of expectations. Fisher will always be compared to that short time span, and it might not be fair to him. How many other coaches have won national championships? Not many. But now, as we await the tipoff of the 1989-90 season, there is all types of talk of repeat. Everyone loved the feeling. Everyone loved that ride. And now, everyone wants a repeat In the past, talking about winning a national championship always lurked somewhere out in left field at Michigan. With Fisher's predecessor, when the talk came to the NCAA tournament, it rested around whether or not Michigan could escape the opening rounds. That now has changed. With that change, there lies a lot of pressure on the man who many claim is the only reason the Wolverines won the title in the first place. Fisher masterfully motivated a team through a tough six game tournament. Now, he must do it for a whole season. Maneuvering a team through an 18 game Big Ten schedule is a lot tougher in some ways. Individual games don't mean as much, and holding a team together, without such a hyper, emotional setting is difficult. There will be those who will be quick to jump on the new coach's back. They will remind you that except for his time coaching Rich East High School in Illinois, and for six NCAA tournament games, Fisher remains untested as a head coach. With each win in the tournament, Fisher won the hearts of more fans across the country. It's easy to get behind the little guy, the underdog, who starts accomplishing more than anyone ever expected. He excelled at it. But Bill Frieder also found that fans are fickle. You better just keep winning. So did Gerry Faust. When Faust came out of a Cincinnati high school to take over the legendary Notre Dame football program, everyone loved him. "Little guy makes it big" went the story. Shortly after, when the results did not meet the expectations, fans wanted him crucified. :. : Cach JaA ctNT Steve Fisher 6-0. 1.000 0-0 Dave.Strack 7-3 .700 0-0 JohnnyOrr 7- ailFidr5 - From 0 to 200 in 11.7 secon F> WEEKENDJOE JUAREZ Senior center Joan Rieger had an all-time personal high in rebounding last season, averaging 4.4 per game. The two show uncharacteristicly strong physical resemblances. If the pressure gets to Fisher, his face by the end of the season may show the wary look that Carter had when he left office. Of course, no one wants to see that. Fisher is the genuinely friendly guy that he appears to be - the apple-cheeked, tomato growing guy-next- door type of image. He has the players' support because of his strong ability to relate and communicate with his players. That's something Frieder never had. Frieder also lacked a positive image. Fisher stresses positive image -- time and time again. Last week when the team scrimmaged at Detroit Country Day High School, Fisher became upset because not all the players were wearing shorts with the Michigan insignia on them. That's attention to detail. When the team travels, Fisher wants a more positive image conveyedby the way they dress - and at all times by the way they address the media. Those are all changes which will upgrade the program. So far, Fisher has enjoyed every minute of the job, claiming each day is See Gill, Page 17 Experience one of the fastest street machines in Michigan. The ComeriCARD Center.
