Last season the Buckeyes had problems with injuries and other maladies to produce an eigth-place finish in the CCHA with a 7-20-5 record. Such performances caused the team to be looked down upon but their play so far this season have caused the critics to reconsider. "They're a much improved team," Michigan coach Red Berenson said: "The first time we played them last year they hadn't won a game yet, nov they have four. They're in a pretty good race to stay in the upper echelon of the league." Presently, Ohio State is in fifth place and two of the reasons for the jump are the play of two new-comers, goalie Mike Bales and center Eddie Choi. Bales was inserted into the lineup when incumbent Todd Fanning dislocated his shoulder two days before the season opener. He has responded with four wins and a 4.34 goals against average. Choi has provided a spark for a punchless Buckeye offense. In eight CCHA games Choi has 10 goals and seven assists. His 17 points lead the; team. "Youth has been a good part with this year's class but not the solution," Buckeye coach Jerry Welsh said. "They're not the answer but just part of the solution." Last season Ohio State had to play 13 of its first 16 games on the road while this year, the Buckeyes were at home for seven of their first 1Q games. The increase in early season home games and the decrease in injuries, have formulated a more successful Ohio State squad. As far as Michigan is concerned the key word is change. Coach Berenson has switched some of the lines around in order to find the proper chemistry. "We're instilling some playmaking and we're looking for players to complement each other," Berenson said. S JOSE JUAREZ/Daily Ryan Pardoski skates along the boards during the 1988 Great Lakes Invitational. Pardoski suspended for academics Wednesday, Michigan coach Red Berenson announced that senior left winger Ryan Pardoski was on academic leave from the team. "Ryan is suspended until he shows that he's doing a better job in school. He's having trouble in a couple of classes so we're taking him out of the line-up," Berenson said. "He's still eligible to play but we don't want hockey to be an excuse for him to be out at Michigan." In his 118 career games at Michigan Pardoski has 19 goals and 22 assists. However, in 10 games this season Pardoski has played sparingly and has only one assist. - Peter Zellen Last weekend Berenson switched defensive lines so Doug Evans would play with Chris Tamer and the two seniors, Alex Roberts and Todd Copeland would skate together. This series marks the return of senior right winger Brad Turner who has been out all season with a broken wrist. He will join the line of Jim. Ballantine at center and Mark Sorenson at left wing. In looking to improve on the offense, Berenson has also moved left winger Denny Felsner back with his old linemate Don Stone. The center will be newcomer Mark Ouimet. The series will start Friday night at Yost and will be completed Sunday in Columbus. by Douglas Donaldson Daily Sports Contributor The Illinois' swimmers head into Ann Arbor tonight for a showdown, with the Wolverines. Foster's gift was granted when her team was invited to compete with the best runners in the nation at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The participating teams were chosen from eight districts in the nation with the two top teams (from each district) receiving automatic bids. Six at-large bids are given out to round out the field. Michigan received its bid on Tuesday along with Big Ten champion Indiana, Minnesota and Iowa. The Wolverines are anxious to prove that a disappointing fourth place finish at districts last Saturday was not indicative of the team's capabilities. "I'm out for blood," said All- American runner Mindy Rowand. "I'm personally shooting for the top ten. As a team we should finish in the top ten also." An excited Foster believes her team deserves to be at the tournament. "If they run the way they should we can finish inthe top 15. We have the ability to win."
