ARTS Friday, November 17, 1989 The Michigan Daily Page 7 RC Writers convene in Greene BY KRISTIN PALM THINK of it as Paris in the 1920s or New York in this decade without the cocaine or the pretensions. Ann Arbor may not have that cosmopolitan feel, but the Residential College Writers do attempt to create the same sense of community fostered by the hip authors hanging out in these metro ar- eas. The RC Writers is a relatively new group which, according to co-founder and RC senior Danny Oko, is expanding, im- proving and serving as a sounding board for authors of all types. The group initially formed three years ago when an RC professor suggested to Nick Petri, a creative writing student who was then a first-year student, that some students should start an RC literary magazine. Petri grooved on the idea, passed the word along to Oko and the end result was Backwords, followed the next year by Clairvoyant Pizza. But the pair, recognizing the need for aspiring writers to not only read each others' work, but to share it on a more intimate level, did not stop with literary journals fea- turing funky titles. Instead, they began a series of poetry readings and established a writers' support group which has, on at least one occasion, been referred to as Writers Anonymous. The group is based on the assumption that writ- ing is indeed an addiction and one of the group's goals is to help writers escape the isolation inherent in the nature of their craft. "Art is a social phenomenon and it can- not exist in a vacuum," Oko said. "There is this idea that it can be a little less lonely." Therefore, the RC Writers meet in East Quad's Greene Lounge at 2 p.m. every Sun- day to share works, critique writing, listen to dialogue or, according to group member Chris Prescott, just "be writerly." "You don't have to say anything," Prescott said. "You can just come." This same philosophy holds true for the magazine and all other segments of the organization, and RC students aren't the only ones invited to take part. "If you can read, you can be a part of our group," Oko said. RC Writers will see the results of the work they have done so far this semester in East Quad room 126 Sunday night as mem- bers take the stage for the year's first RC Writers poetry reading. Six or seven students are scheduled to read, and an open mike for- mat will follow. Prescott advised to prepare for experiences that can't be transcribed on paper since some performance poetry pieces are anticipated. T Oko said the uniqueness of a group like the RC Writers is in part due to the RC pro- gram itself, which he describes as an "immersive process." "That sort of structure is very nurturing. It nurtures groups like the RC Writers and the RC Players." And perhaps groups such as these will, in turn, nurture some stable careers. "Some of these people are going to make it and we like to think some of these are go- ing to be some of us," Oko said. THE RC WRITERS POETRY READING takes place Sunday night at 8 p.m. in Room 126 of East Quad. Because of the reading, Writers Anonymous will not meet.
