THE GANG'S ALL HERE (Busby Berkeley, 1943) MLB 3 7:00 Splashy, overdone war musical is fun, but not much deeper. A few rollicking numbers like "The Lady in the Tutti Fruitti Hat" keep this one mildly interesting including the only singing performance ever by Benny Goodman. Starring Alice Faye and Carmen Miranda. FOLLOW THE FLEET (Mark Sandrich, 1936) MLB 3 9:00 Timeless and still the ultimate in musical entertainment, the great Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers star in one of their trademark films. As- taire and Randolph Scott star as two sailors who fall for two sisters. Both quaint and grandiose, the film features a great Irving Berlin score. Look for Lucille Ball in a bit part. THE CAT FROM OUTER SPACE (Norman Tokar, 1978) Aud A 7:00 Remember this one? Disney's live action children's adventure tells the story of an intergalactic-travel- ling feline who seeks help from American scientists so that he can return to the stars. Of course, things go wrong and some kids get involved, and the result is a wild time - sounds like E.T., huh? THE SHAGGY DOG (Charles Barton, 1959) Aud A 9:15 A Disney Double feature! What could be better? Oft-colorized slapstick comedy about boy who is transformed into the fun-loving mutt via ancient oracles is enter- taining, but it doesn't touch The Shaggy D.A.! Starring My Three Sons Fred MacMurray. SANSHO THE BAILIFF (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1953) Lorch 7:00 Travel back to 11th Century Japan for a grim tale of a family who is ruined when the father speaks out for human rights. Other atrocities await the family as Mi- zoguchi takes a critical look at an oppressive imperialistic Japanese government. SATURDAY LITTLE VERA (Vasily Pichul, 1988) Mich. Th. 5:30 & 11:00 See Friday's listing THE DYBBUK (Michael Was- zynski, 1937) Mich Th. 8:00 Long-awaited midwest premiere of an old, recently restored film, only now available in its original form for the first time. A Yiddish horror film with touches of surreal- ism and unusual romance. Certainly a film to cause a lot of talk. In Yid- dish with English subtitles. See Review, Page 4. TORCH SONG TRILOGY (Paul Bogart, 1988) Hillel 7:00 & 9:30 A controversial Tony-award film about homosexuality and gender roles comes to film. A sensitive and humorous look at these issues through the eyes of a female imper- sonator looking for romantic ful- fillment. THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST (Martin Scorcese, 1988) MLB 3 6:30 & 9:00 Scorcese does his directorial imi- tation of Cecil B. DeMille in the most overrated, talked about cine- matic endeavor since Heaven's Gate. What's the fuss? You either love it or you hate it. Willem Dafoe plays Jesus as he is torn be- tween his lust for Mary Magdeline and his devotion to God. Radical in- terpretation of the patriarch of Christianity and a bit hard to swal- low, too. Runs just shy of three hours. THE PRODIGAL DAUGHTER (Jacques Doillon, 1981) Lorch 7:00, 8:45, & 10:25 Ann Arbor premier of French film about young woman disillu- sioned about her father when she discovers he has taken a lover.
