The Michigan Daily - Sports Monday - November 6, 1989 - Page 5 VOLLEYBALL continued from page 1 "We had difficulty with our outside game," Michigan coach Joyce Davis said. "All three of our outside hitters hit in the negative numbers. When that happens it'll kill you, and it killed us." Marshall, who only managed one kill, credited the team's poor show- ing to the Buckeyes strong defense. "Defensively they are the best team I've seen. They just picked up everything; they just dominated from the start." Ohio State wasn't too bad on offense either. Outside hitter Leisa Wissler spiked 12 over the net and Lisa Vitali added 9 kills. Michigan's Carla Hunter and Kim Clover combined to produce a majority of the sparse Wolverine point total. Hunter, who had an out- standing weekend altogether, led the squad with 11 kills. The Wolverine's welcome to Bloomington wasn't any warmer, as Indiana demolished Michigan, 15-8, 15-9, 15-12. The 6-7 Hoosiers easily controlled the first two matches. Their team continuity flowed, where- as the Wolverines continuity disap- peared. "When our passing is on, we can run the middle attacks and the quick set to hold blockers, that's the key to our game," said Hoosier outside hitter Diane Hoereth. But the Wolverine passing was the exact opposite. "I couldn't find six players to put on the floor all at the same time, that could play with a level of intensity and control," Davis said. "Our passing was just weak and inconsistent." In the third and final game, Michigan took a commanding 12-7 * led behind the strong play of Hunter. She drilled three of her eight kills during the game and added some strong serving. But then Michigan's defense left for the bus early, as Indiana rattled off eight straight points. The Wol- verines couldn't even muster pos- session of the ball once during the onslaught. Indiana coach Tom Shoji credited the serving of Stacy Hughes for the streak. Hughes had two serving aces in the run. "The first three serves were really tough. I don't know if anybody could have passed those serves," Shoji said. "Then Michigan got a little nervous and probably could have passed a little better if the first three weren't so tough." Davis put the blame on her side of the net. "We squandered a lead and just let them have it. We made totally unforced errors, just mental mistakes that cost us the game. The only bright spot for the weekend was the Wolverine serving. The team lofted eight service aces against Indiana while the squad's service errors decreased. Michigan had only six against Ohio State and seven against the Hoosiers. lviarshall Standout spiker excels 0 at the game she loves by Theodore Cox Daily Sports Writer Since senior Karen Marshall joined the women's volleyball team three and a half years ago, the Wolverines have 8 wins and 59 losses in the Big Ten. Often Marshall is asked, "why stick with such a miserable team, why not just give it up and quit?" "I don't regret playing," she replies. "It is probably one of the most positive experiences despite the losses. I've made my closest friends at this school through the volleyball program. I like the social aspect of it. They (her teammates) are great friends - I wouldn't trade that for anything." Marshall has been involved in one sport or another all her life, so she wouldn't feel comfortable without playing on some team. "I started playing volleyball in the seventh grade; it was the next sport after basketball," Marshall said. "I've always been athletic. I lettered in three sports through- out junior high and high school, including basketball, volleyball, and softball." Marshall has never been short of competition. Her older sister, Julie, also played for the Michigan volleyball team before graduating last year. The two competed against one another all through their teens. Since both played the same position in high school, they were often pitted against each other during practices. Whoever played better that day earned bragging rights for the evening. "It was competitive, but it was good because it pushed both of us to try - to try harder and work hard- er," Marshall said. "We helped each other in that way." The elder Marshall concurs that the competition between the two was fierce, but attributes it largely to her sister's own passion for athletics. "I think her aggression came from playing basketball," Julie said. "I know every time I saw her play, she was on the ground at least three times a game. And in volleyball, she really enjoys hitting the ball." After reuniting at Michigan, Karen and Julie went from competitors to teammates. Their positions changed, so no longer would they have to rival each other for the starting spot on the roster. Instead, their focus became working together. It didn't take the Bloomfield Hills native long to decide that Michigan was the right school for her. Not only would Michigan allow Marshall to remain close to home, but she could also rejoin her sister and attend what she feels is one of the top academic institutions in the nation. "When I looked at schools I didn't look at volleyball programs, so this one came out on top," Marshall said. "I didn't know anything about the program except that we were young. I thought it was going to be exciting, since we had a new coach (Joyce Davis) coming in, plus there were five other freshmen coming in with me." As the team struggled along for the next three years, Karen quietly became stronger every match, with last year being by far her best. As a junior, Marshall led the team in kills with 322, and digs with 283. Those statistics earned her the recognition as the team's Most Valuable Player. In addition, she earned Academic All- Big Ten honors. The team rewarded Marshall by naming her captain this season. "I was really excited that they chose me as captain. That was probably one of the highlights of the season," Marshall said. Frontline teammate Julia Sturm feels she deserves such an honor. "She'll put forth 100%. You can always count on her. She'll do anything for you," Sturm said. As the captain, Marshall welcomed the five first-year students Michigan added to the squad this year by quickly making them feel comfortable with the team. "She's really inspiring," frosh Hayley Lorenzen said. "She brings knowledge of other teams to us." Marshall admits that the captain position isn't that difficult, especially since her teammates are basically her friends. "I really love this team. We just get along great. Of my four teams that I've played on here, this is the one where we really click and that's why it's been rough to see how bad our record is." Karen Marshall has reached new heights with her exemplary play as well as her outstanding leadership abilities. - I ~ All in a day's work Red Berenson may be Michigan's hockey coach, but he proved he could still skate... at least against old timers. Berenson tallied two assists as the Wolverine Old Timers upset the Detroit Red Wing Old Timers 10-6. Berenson is guarded by Dennis Hextall . Michigan's all time goal scoring leader Dave Debol said that Hextall threatened goon tactics during the first shift.. Debol recounted, "He said, "Slow down or I'll chop your legs out from under you."' Berenson received the only penalty of the game. Berenson received a one second penalty for holding after only two seconds had elapsed in the game. It wasa makeup call from 1972, which referee Art Skov had missed at that time. t..c USĀ° Y C 'p. . ~ S S ti1 ' S 100% Wool & Worsted Wool Suits & Tuxedos -Dress Shirts-Ties- 313 S.
