0 Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 3, 1989 Purdue Continued from Page 1 Schembechler hopes that Hunter's scrambling and passing abilities will scare the daylights out of his team and avoid a letdown. That fourth quarter against the Spartans also alerted Schembechler and defensive coordinator Lloyd Carr to get ready for a possible offensive explosion from Hunter and the Boilermakers. "(Hunter) put 21 points up on that board awful fast. I think we'd better prepare for a scrambling quarterback," Schembechler said. "If we don't, it'll be a mistake." Schembechler said he might place as many as six defensive backs in the game at one time. Along with a tight secondary defense, Michigan hopes that its pass rush will keep placing insurmountable pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The Wolverines already have 28 sacks this year, with defensive lineman Mike Evans leading the charge with five. Purdue has not fared successfully on defense either, already yielding 2,945 yards this season, 1,142 yards more than Michigan has. One standout on the Boilermaker defense, however, has been junior linebacker Darrin Trieb, who leads the squad with 83 tackles. Michigan fullback Jarrod Bunch continued to practice this week and will play for the second straight week. Bevy of bowl bids at stake this weekend by Michael Bess Daily Sports Contributor Ohio State (5-2) at Northwestern (0-7) Ohio State needed to score 34 second-half points last week to defeat a rugged Minnesota squad. Up next, Northwestern. Iowa head coach Hayden Fry said that the '89 Wildcats are the best Northwestern team he's ever seen. That's quite a backhanded compliment, considering Francis Peay's team has yet to win a game. The Bucks might just need more late game heroics from quarterback Greg Frey to keep their A ua t B John Hancock Bowl hopes alive. Michigan State (3-4) at Indiana (4-3) After a close victory over Purdue, the Spartans will try to revert back to their old game plan. This consists of: 1) getting really pumped for a big opponent, 2) playing well and then making a couple of stupid errors to lose the game, and 3) whining the next week about how they should have won. State has mastered this process. Illinois (6-1) at Iowa (4-3) Jeff George and company invade Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes. Illinois may get distracted from the pink walls of the visitor's locker room or the prospect of playing Michigan on November 11. The Hawkeyes need all the help they can get. Iowa is in jeopardy of missing a bowl for the first time since 1981. What a shame. Wisconsin (2-5) at Minnesota (4-3) The question is, will anyone watch this game? The Badgers must contend with Minnesota's "bend and break" defense, which last week relinquished 42 points to Ohio State. It's scary to think that Wisconsin's program, one of the sorriest in college football, is under investigation by the NCAA. Imagine how bad they'll be if they have to follow the rules.
