Why are these people smiling? It's because they're so funny, they can't
help but laugh at their own humor.
Second City takes
first place in comedy
BY LYNNE COHN
C HICAGOANS usually have to
wait to get a taste of their home-
grown show. When you're in
Chicago, you have to plan in ad-
vance to see the extraordinary Second
City or else you'll be waiting on the
curb trying to buy a ticket from a
scalper. To appease this popular de-
mand, Second City created a separate
traveling show in September of
1961, and this show is coming to
Ann Arbor tomorrow night.
Starving unknowns such as Alan
Arkin, Dan Aykroyd, John Candy,
Rick Moranis and Gilda Radner have
blossomed into famous actors by
first appearing at Second City. Each
cast introduces new talent to the
world of comedy. In existence since
1959, Second City earned its unique
name from A. J. Liebling's ridicu-
lous satire of Chicago as the "second
city" to New York. The media
awarded instant success to the comi-
cal group; Time Magazine referred to
I U .,
Second City as "a temple of satire."
The Institute of International Educa-
tion planned tours which even began
to make Second City a priority on
the tour itinerary for foreign visitors.
In the fall of 1959, Bernard
Sahlins joined David Shepherd and
Paul Sills to create Second City,
which has prospered ever since.
Clive Barnes wrote in The New
York Times in 1969, "The entire re-
cent tradition of American theatrical
satire can be summed up in three
words: 'The Second City'."
With a home base in both
Chicago and Toronto and a fabulous
touring ensemble, Second City con-
tinues to entertain audiences across
the nation. The cast prewrites few
lines, and the actors create hysterical
improvisational comedy time and
again, leaving audiences clamoring
wildly for more. Second City is a
show not to be missed.
SECOND CITY will appear at Ann
Arbor's Michigan Theater tomor-
row at 8 p.m. Tickets can be pur-
chased for $10.50 and $12.50 at the
Michigan Theater.

SOUNDGARDEN is a band that is
more than capable of being heard,
adept at creating vibratory distur-
bance (as well as physical destruc-
tion), loud, raunchy - and their full
force assault has been known to re-
su;t in the public's enjoyment.
Looks like they fit the bill, and
they'll be at St. Andrew's in Detroit
Sunday night to prove it.
"Hopefully we'll cause some
damage and it will be extremely loud
and we hope to be in top form," said
drummer Matt Cameron. "The past
week of shows have been a lot
tighter, things are looking a lot bet-
ter, it's a lot more energy involved,
and a lot more sweat and a lot more
volume."
Fans of Soundgarden's first major
label release, Ultramega OK, will
notice a change in personnel on the
Louder than Love tour. Bassist Hiro
Yamamoto has returned to school,
and, while the loss may seem tragic
at first (who else could belt out the
manic "Circle of Power"?), the band
seems to have found a worthy re-
placement in Jason Everman, for-
merly of Nirvana - a product, like
Soundgarden, of Seattle's Sub Pop
record label. Rounding out the quar-
tet are guitarist Kim Thayil and vo-
calist Chris Cornell.
Unlikely as it may seem, Seattle
is the nation's newest hotbed for
powerful bands like Soundgarden.
However, Cameron said, it was not
