ARTS The Michigan Daily The Cynics Friday, November 3, 1989 rant Page 7 and rave-up BY BRIAN JARVINEN W1VHEN Rock 'n' Roll started way-back then, parents hated it, for good reason. You all know about the big stars that broke na- tionally and are now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but still aren't on the classic FM stations. But even more scary were the local hoodlums who would take over their parent's garage and annoy the neighbors to no end with loud loud loud demonic, beat-of- the-jungle noises and endless streams of rhyming bitches at the local girls who held out against allowing them their real cool time. In other words, a lot of kids found something their parents couldn't control, in- creasing its appeal exponentially. Of course since that time Rock 'n' Roll (in fact, it happened right away) has become yet another Big Culture Business, with all the bull-shit that goes with the term. Fortu- nately though, some people have never lost sight of the fun that can be had out in the garage, and you won't have to be a grave- digger to check out such a band when Pitts- burgh PA's Cynics play Saturday. Rock 'n' Roll is best experienced live, but when that ain't possible it should be ab- sorbed in three minute slices of total self-re- lease - beyond that it is too easy to get dis- tracted by whatever else is going on around you. The Cynics understand this; although they have two albums already out their best records are their 45s. Unlike the Chesterfield Kings, whose records only hint at the power they display live, The Cynics' records melt right on the turntable. These things are so hot they are the only "return-upon-demand" promo records I've ever had to return. Intense slices of plain pure rock: fast fast bass, pounding drums, psychotic organ, screaming distortion, and more screaming 'bout muh bay-bee from the vocalist, when he isn't on though, and Gregg Kostelich, the "monster- guitar" player, knows how important it is to give the people what they want, as he also runs Get Hip records, one of the prime torchbearers of the "totally boss" 45 flame these days. The band is releasing a new al- bum before Christmas, about which he says "you'll probably laugh; it's just gonna be called Rock-n-Roll. We were gonna call it A Tribute to The Cynics, cuz there's so many of these fucking tribute records, but a lot of people might think it's an old record, or re- ally be other bands doing our tunes." (The band will be appearing on the upcoming Tribute to the Sonics, though). The record delivers on the promise of the singles. It's got both kinds of tunes, rock and roll, in- cluding an excellent cover of the Unrelated Segments' "Cry Cry Cry," which featurbs the greatest opening truths this side of "96 Tears": "Woke up this morning and the sky was black / My baby's gone and she woV't come back." The album has plenty of the elements that make the 45s so killer, lile "fat Gretsch guitar, as opposed to a Les Paul so it wasn't as metallic. We made it as hot as possible." THE CYNICS play tomorrow night at 10:30 p.m. at Club Heidelberg, 215 N. Main. Ticket are $4. COLORS opens the show. the harmonica that is.
