Michigan basketball coach Steve Fisher
announced at yesterday's team media day that
senior guard Rumeal Robinson will be the team
captain at the outset of the 1989-90 season.
Mike Griffin, Loy Vaught, and Terry Mills
will rotate through the non-conference games as
co-captain. Fisher said that he is not sure if he
will name one of the trio as a permanent co-
captain for the Big Ten season.
Coming off of a national championship, the
Wolverines are favored by most preseason polls
and publications to win the Big Ten. Fisher is
not concerned about about being'overrated.
"We're going to be good," he said. "I'm smart
enough to know that if you have veteran players
you'll enhance your chances of winning on the
road. And we've got veteran players. We've got
four returning starters from a team that one the,
national championship.
"The most pleasing thing through the first
two weeks has been attitude. But this is not
surprising because of our senior leadership," he
added.
Robinson said that the team has progressed
more quickly this year than last. "The guys that
we have here now have been here for years. Last
year w a i lot of giys who were new and had
to learn the system. This year we started right
into the offense."
Presently the team is without the services of
sophomore Rob Pelinka, who has tendinitis in
both of his knees and has not been able to
practice. Also, junior guard Demetrius Calip has
been slowed by a sprained ankle, which kept him
out of a couple of practices.
This year Crisler Arena will have a four-sided
scoreboard hanging from the ceiling as well as
new auxiliary scoreboards at both ends of the
arena.
The center scoreboard will cost $750,000. It
will be a four-color matrix scoreboard with the
capability of showing single-frame pictures, but
not motion-picture footage. A scoreboard with
the capacity to show replays would have cost an
additional $1.5 million.
There will also be auxiliary scoreboards and
television monitors in the concourses.
