Sporting an 0-9 con- ference record, the Wolverines are still searching for a cure for their last-place woes. The team, however, does not suffer from a lack of talent. For in- stance, senior Kim Clover constant- ly spikes quick sets from sophomore Autumn Collins, driving the ball with force. Junior Julia Sturm's powerful service game has given the team aces time and again. Both out- side hitter Karen Marshall and frosh phenom Hayley Lorenzen provide team leadership with their outstand- ing play. But the team lacks the intensity and the concentration to compete in the Big Ten. Michigan's weekend loss to Pur- due, the conference's second-worst team, exemplifies the Wolverines' lack of intensity and concentration. On the previous evening, Michigan lost to a tough Illinois team, but played well throughout the match. They played against the Illini with exhilaration and executed with authority, but were just plain out- played by a better team. However, both Illinois coach Mike Hebert and Michigan coach Joyce Davis agreed that the Wolver- ines would handle Purdue with ease if they played at a similar level the next night. That did not happen. INSTEAD, Michigan came out sluggish and sloppy, allowing 13 aces in the match, committing 10 ball handling errors, and playing down to the level of their com- petition. Michigan obviously had the more talented team, hitting more effect- ively than the Boilermakers. In fact, the Wolverine attack percentage of .284 was better than Purdue's paltry .201. But, the Michigan digs and passes were not of a normal caliber, with stray shots leading to Purdue points left and right. The game scores were close, with Purdue winning three of four, but Mich- igan's small mental errors led to big differences in the match, adding up to another Wolverine loss. During the course of the season, Michigan has given up strings of points that buryvany hopes for a Wolverine victory. Twice against Purdue, Michigan allowed more than six points off one service. Once, the Wolverines fell behind 10-0 in a game against Western Michigan. Ill- inois rolled off eight straight points in the second game against Mich- igan. In all of these games, the Wolverines came back strong, even taking that game against Western. But in none of the matches did Michigan emerge victorious. Western Michigan coach Robert Buck said: "If Michigan could play with this much spirit , they would be in the middle of the Big Ten (standings)." If Michigan played every game as if it were against the Big Ten leader, then the Wolverines would not be cellar dwellers, but, at the very least, a middle-of-the-road Big Ten team.
