I Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, October 24, 1989 Crew teams finish well in Boston meet by Phil Green Daily Sports Writer Amid extremely strong headwinds and generally difficult weather con- ditions, the Michigan crew team had a very respectable showing during last weekend's "Head of the Charles" race in Boston, Mass. The women's fifth-place finish was complemented by the light- weight eight's 24th-place finish and the heavyweight four's 21st-place effort. "We rowed the best race I've ever rowed during my three years on the team," crew member Scott Grove said about the lightweight eight's 24th-place finish out of forty boats in Sunday's "Head of the Charles Race in Boston." The women, who took third last year, were very pleased with this year's outcome. "Our boat for this year was very young and fairly inexperienced compared to the other boats out there, so we're very happy with the results," rower Allison Bidlack explained. By finishing fifth, the women guarantee themselves an invitation back for next year when they hope to continue their success. The Vesper Boat Club from Philadelphia, won the lightweight men's race while Dartmouth proved to be the fastest college team, Lacrosse team defeats Rockets, snow storm posting the third quickest time overall. Other top schools included Georgetown (15th) and Harvard (17th). Jon Block, a rower in the light- weight shell, "can't really say we're disappointed at all. These are the best lightweight crews in the country." Grove adds, "It was a trip very well worth it. Now we are able to see how competitive we are nationally." The team's next meet is this Saturday, the Speakman, in Col- umbus, Ohio. Marietta, Purdue, and Wisconsin represent only three of the many strong midwestern schools that should be attending. In last year's Speakman the men's lightweight eight came away victorious. "We plan to repeat," Grove said, "and I think we're going to smoke the other boats." The Wolverines will give the entire team a chance to row in this meet as they prepare for the year's big race, the Dad Vails in Philadelphia in May. Besides the three boats that competed in Boston, Michigan plans on sending a women's lightweight eight and lightweight four, and a men's heavyweight eight and lightweight four to Columbus. Amherst person wins Griddes When informed of his victory in last weeks Griddes competition, James O'Connell responded with his best Keith Jackson impersonation. "Oh, my!" said an elated O'Connell. "I come from Amherst, MA, and the University of Massachusettes has no decent football team, but I learned a lot on my own. Go Blue!" O'Connell can come to The Daily to pick up his gift certificate for lunch or dinner for two at O'Sullivan's Eatery and Pub ($12 maximum). Slippery Rock at Indiana (PA) Score of Michigan game: Michigan Indiana Name and Phone #: by Sarah Osburn Daily Sports Contributor In what was described by tri- captain John Paul as a "very ugly game," the Michigan lacrosse club defeated the Toledo Rockets Friday night at Tartan Turf. The win kept their record perfect at 4-0. The game, played in a blinding snowstorm, was a misleadingly close 8-7 victory for Michigan. The Wolverines started all first-year players, allowing them to gain valuable experience for regular season play, which begins in the spring. The leading scorers for the team were Marc Silbergeld, Mike Kennedy, and Brad Thompson, with two goals apiece. On the defensive side, solid goal tending was turned in by first year player B.J. Bardy. Tri-captain Mike Kennedy said, about the game, "It was hard weather and there were a lot of variables but we played pretty good and it was good to get the first- year players experience." According to coach Bob DiGiovanni, Toledo has not traditionally been a strong club. This easy game came at a very convenient time for the Wolverines because they two of their players, Rob DiGiovanni and John Paul, were both involved with try-outs for the Detroit Turbos, a professional lacrosse team. The Turbos drafted six players from Michigan schools: three from Michigan State and three from Michigan (the third player from Michigan graduath4 last year). The fact that Michigan had ar equal number of players chosen to Michigan State is impressive because State has a well established varsity team. DiGiovanni and Paul have been attending try-out practices for the past week and will find out if they've earned a permanent position on the Turbos sometime in the next week. The lacrosse club has one more fall game tentatively scheduled for this weekend but unfortunately, as of yet they have no one to play. According to Kennedy they "just want to finish the season strong, no matter who we play." Bowling club aims for first Big Ten Championship The Michigan men's and women's bowling clubs will compete on October 28 and 29 in the Big Ten Bowling and Billiards Championships in Iowa, hoping that this is the year for a Big Ten victory. The hope is far from unfounded when one realizes that Michigan will field a squad of veterans who set Michigan records last year. At the core of the women's team is Beth Yaros, Gina Sartor, and Sheree Matthews, who have logged more games of collegiate competition than any threesome in Michigan history. The men's accomplishments are also notable. Last year, the Wolverines placed second at the Association of Collegiate Unions International Regional Tournament and earned Michigan's first sectional berth ever. The returning starters Tom Jane, Kevin Keller, Eric Allen and Ed Rondot will be supported by a strong field of first-year bowlers "For the first time in thirty years, Michigan will be fighting for first place in our conference," said Rondot. "With perseverance, we may be nationally ranked. If one simply measured the heart of the teams competing, Michigan would tilt every scale." - From Staff Reports Read Jim Poniewozik Every Weekendl $ e 'm"Tuesday is $2.00United Artists Day" All day Tuesday.
