Considering he starred in only three major films (Giant was the third), this evening is quite a treat. Dean stars in the film adapta- tion of Steinbeck's novel of two brothers fighting for the love of their father. J.D. portrays the mem- orable Cal in this gripping film. MY LOVE HAS BEEN BURN- ING (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1949) Lorch 7:00 The Japanese film festival showcasing the work of Mizoguchi continues with a political film about a woman's efforts to seek a Constitution in 1880s Japan which will secure women's rights who meets with some predictable oppo- sition from a group of men. MISS OYU (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1951) Lorch 8:45 This week's second Mizoguchi feature tells the intricate and com- plicated story of two lovers who try to continue their elicit relationship amidst the existence of their "proper" relationships to their spouses. DEVI (THE GODDESS) (Satyjit Ray, 1960) MLB 3 7:00 A young woman goes insane after which her family, friends, the poor and deranged mistake her as a goddess and come to pray for her. THE WORLD OF APU (Satyjit Ray, 1960) MLB 3 9:00 The third installment in Ray's Apu trilogy has the hero falling in love and marrying a young girl, later revealing to her his spiritual transformation. Beautifully filmed in black and white. A LESSON IN LOVE (Ingmar Bergman, 1954) MLB 4 8:40 Not one of Bergman's best, but a good one just the same. Gunnar Bjornatrand stars as the obstetrician married for 15 years who decides to have an affair. Meanwhile, his wife, Eva Dahlbeck decides to have an af- fair with her former lover. Some nice moments of comedy. SUMMER INTERLUDE (Ingmar Bergman, 1950) MLB 4 7:00 & 10:20 An early Bergman film uses the Bergmanesque style of flashback as a young woman looks back on an old love affair. A film also known as Illicit Interlude, it marked the cinematic coming out of the Swedish master. SATURDAY MURDER (Alfred Hitchcock, 1930) Aud A A7:00 Visions of 12 Angry Men in this early Hitchcock drama starring Herbert Marshall as the lone juror who's convinced an accused woman on trial is innocent. RICH AND STRANGE (Alfred Hitchcock, 1932) Aud A 9:00 A "money doesn't bring happi- ness" message movie. Henry Kendall and Joan Barry star as the bored, married couple who inherit a lot of money and decide to travel around the world where they en- counter unforeseen adventures, but no happiness. THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN (Rainer Werner Fass- binder, 1979) MLB 3 7:00 & 9:30 Hanna Schygulla stars as the penniless wife of a soldier in WW2 ravaged Germany who builds an in- dustrial empire on her own after the war. This was the first of Fass- binder's three post-war films which included Lola and Veronika Voss. SUNDAY WHO FRAMED ROGER RAB- BIT (Robert Zemricks, 1988) Mich. Th. 5:00 The technological wonder of the recent cinema. Zemricks combines animation with live action in this innovative spoof of crime thrillers. Starring Bob Hoskins and Roger. VARIETY (E.A. Dupont, 1925 ) Mich Th. 7:00 A German film from the silent era tells the tale of two trapeze twirlers and their testy temperamen- tal times together. With live organ accompaniment. HUD (Martin Ritt, 1962) Aud A 7:00 Paul Newman immortal perfor- mance was robbed of the Oscar he deserved. Set in the modern West, Newman is the no-account rancher in this film about moral degrada- tion. Co-stars Patricia Neil and Melvyn Douglas did win Oscars, though.
