Field Hockey vs. Iowa Today, 3 p.m. Tartan Turf SPORTS Volleyball vs. Illinois Tonight, 7:30 p.m. Varsity Arena The Michigan Daily Friday, October 20, 1989 Page 11 Somebody has to win: 'M' spikers face lowly Purdue by Jeff Sheran Daily Sports Writer The Michigan volleyball team concludes the first half of its Big Ten season this weekend when it hosts Illinois tonight and Purdue tomorrow night. The Wolverines (5-10 overall, 0-7 in the Big Ten) face an Illinois team (13-3, 5-2) that not only ion the Big Ten title last year, but did so with a record of 18-0. Illinois is currently tied with Wisconsin for third in the Big Ten. Spearheading the Illini attack are junior Laura Bush (.403) and senior Nancy Brookhart (.400), who respectively lead the con- ference in hitting percentage. Mi- chigan's Kim Clover (.307) ranks fifth. Hitting Percentage, however, is a- category that illuminates the difference between the two op- -ponents. Illinois tops the league in hitting percentage with a .294 ;'ark, whereas Michigan rounds out the list at .169. Such disparate statistics do not faze Wolverine head coach Joyce Davis, however. "The conference is really tight from top to bottom. On any night, anything can happen. It's really unpredictable," Davis said. Purdue, on the other hand, is tied for last place with the Wolverines. They, too are in search of their first conference Big Ten victorv. Defense: by Eric Lemont Daily Hockey Writer The Michigan hockey team hopes to improve on its 1-0-1 start when it takes on an evenly- matched University of Illinois at Chicago team. Both coaches preach defense as the key to the weekend's matches. "We have to play well defensively, said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. "We are going to win games when we give up three goals or less on the road." Last year, the Wolverines had a better record on the road than at home and Berenson feels the team is confident going into their second of three consecutive series away from Yost Ice Arena. He said the players "know we can win on the road. We're going in with a determined confidence." With the loss of Sheldon Gorski, the nation's leading goal scorer last year, UIC also finds itself relying on its defense. The Flames return goaltender Dave Depinto, last year's team co- MVP, as well as all of their defensemen. is key "Their strength is DePinto," said Berenson. "They lean on him a lot." UIC head coach Val Belmonte, whose team lost seven offensive players from last year's squad said: "We're a little inexperienced up front but our goaltending and defensemen are really a solid core for us." The Flames (0-2) opened their season with a sluggish performance last weekend when they dropped two straight to Ohio State. The Buckeyes finished in 8th place last year. But neither Berenson nor Belmonte are placing much importance on the Flames' two losses. "It was a disappointing weekend," Belmonte said. "We did not prepare well mentally. I think we were resting back on last year's laurels." Although losing 5-2 and 6-2 to Ohio State, UIC did play well in the two games, outshooting the Buckeyes, 70-43. Berenson feels the losses were mostly the result of the Flames running into a hot goaltender in Mike Bales. This is similar to the way Mark Michaud helped Miami of Ohio to a tie against Michigan last Friday night, 2-2. "We were the better team," Berenson said, "but their goalie was the difference," referring to Michigan's games against Miami. "I was surprised that Ohio State won both games, but they (UIC) had 45 shots (in the second game). That's a lot of shots for a visiting team." Because off their third-place CCHA finish last year, Berenson expects UIC to pick up their level of play this weekend against Michigan, last year's fourth place finisher. "I know Chicago will bounce back," he said. "I don't know when they lost three in a row." A look through last year's schedule shows the Flames did not lose three consecutive games. In addition, UIC took two out of four games from the Wolverines last year. The other two games went to overtime with Michigan gaining a win and a tie. against UIc Clover In their quest for a win, the Boilermakers feature star senior Debbie McDonald. McDonald ranks third behind Bush and Brookhart with a .338 hitting percentage. She also holds the league lead in kills per game with 5.07. Davis feels that winning is not the only concern this weekend. "I'm not that distressed - we look to improve on our 10th place finish, and we can still do that," she said. "We need to have each goal met every night for a ten-star performance. We've had nights where we did five or six areas great, but one or two killed us." M' field hockey set for doubleheader by Jamie Burgess Daily Sports Writer The Wolverine stickers begin a season-ending stint of five con- ference games this weekend, meeting Iowa today and the Northern Illinois Huskies on Sunday at Tartan Turf. This weekend's doubleheader pits Michigan against two teams with something to prove. Both have already beaten the Wolverines, and are fighting for the Midwest Col- legiate conference championship. Yet despite the Hawkeyes' tie for first, they aren't taking the underdog Wolverines lightly. "I think Mich- igan gained a lot of confidence down here in a game they lost by only 3- 1," Iowa coach Beth Beglian said. "That's one of our closest conference scores this year." Iowa threatens with Erica Rich- ards, who has consistently led the conference in scoring, and Kristy Gleason, who filled the net with four goals against Michigan State earlier in the season. Combine Iowa's potent offense with Michigan's sur- render of three penalty corners for every two of their own, and Friday afternoon could prove a long one for the Wolverine defense. Fortunately, Michigan's bright spot lies in the goal crease. Joanne Green's last performance against Northern Illinois, along with her .788 save percentage, has definitely been on Huskie coach Laurie Bell's mind. "We weren't very effective moving the ball," Bell said. "We're going to play our style of hockey. We just have to take a lot of shots and hope a few go in." Due to Michigan coach Patti Smith's similar displeasure with the attack game, the Wolverines have made a shift of their own. Judy F9RSAE '87 HONDA HURRICANE Must sell black/red. And Hilary Hughes, who was playing defense, is now a midfielder. "I think (Patti) wanted more power on the attack," Burinskas said. "We need to be more ready to go to the goal keeper's pads." But regardless of line-ups and strategies, both teams will go into the weekend mentally prepared. "We were happy with the way we played them before," Burinskas said. "We'll definitely be right in there." 0 (f' ellit n-' ,\ &- WEEKEND MAGAZINE Fridays in The Daily 763-0379 Looking for a Closer Walk with God?
