Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, October 17, 1989 HOCKEY NOTEBOOK Icers take a breather from conference play by Andrew Gottesman Daily Hockey Writer Michigan's hockey team will take a break from CCHA competition and the road tonight when it takes on Western Ontario in an exhibition game. While it may be a breather from league play, the "exhibition" (Yost Ice Arena, 7:30 p.m.) is hardly being looked upon as such by Michigan coach Red Berenson. "It's like any other game," Berenson said. "It goes on our record and counts in determining NCAA bids at the end of the season." Berenson is not looking at the game as a sure-win. "They've played more games than us so they might have more of a game readiness," he said. "But we might experiment a little with some things like line changes." "As far as Canadian University hockey goes, it's pretty good," added senior forward and Alberta native Ryan Pardoski. "Most of their kids have played junior hockey. Expect a good game." The ice at Yost will be a welcome sight for Michigan (1-0-1), who is coming off a road trip to Miami (OH) and will play its next five games away from Ann Arbor. "It breaks up the road mentality," Berenson said. Admission is free to all students. HOLD THAT LINE: When Miami tied Michigan, 2-2, Friday, it rep- resented a major defensive achievement for the Redskins. Miami held the opposition to under three goals only twice in 32 league games last season. STANDING ROOM ONLY: Miami's Goggin Ice Arena has a listed capacity of 2,200. But the Redskins, who have finished last in the CCHA the past four years, led the conference in percentage of capacity in attendance for home games in 1988-89. They averaged 2,450 fans, or 111 percent of capacity. HANGING TOUGH: The Wolverines successfully killed all seven powerplays the Redskins mounted last weekend. Michigan itself converted on three of eight powerplays. UNLUCKY RANKING?: Michigan was ranked 13th nationally in the WMEB-Media poll. CCHA counterparts Michigan State, Lake Superior and Bowling Green were 1st , 6th and 10th, respectively. University of Michigan REAL ESTATE ASSOCIATION :Iueui e I by David H yman Daily Hockey VVrit er OXFORD - In last weekend's hockey games between Michigan and Miami, Ohio, there was one ingredient which stood out above all, even above sophomore sensation Denny Felsner's four goals. Goaltending. Both Warren Sharples of Mich- igan and the Redskins' Mark Mi- chaud played spectacular in Friday night's 2-2 tie, before a sellout,' standing room crowd of 3,068. Sharples came up big stopping 25 shots only allowing a screened shot and a tip in to get by. "Theyr were tough goals," Sharples said, but he was able to stand tall to all the other attacks. However, it was Redskin goalie Michaud who stole the show, foiling a plethora of good opportunities for the Wolverines, turning away 46 saves in all. "Goaltending kept them in the game both nights," Sharples said. Michaud, a walk-on last season with a 7-12 record and a 5.07 goals against average, became the starting goalie this year when senior Steve McKichan left to the Vancouver Canucks organization this summer. "(Michaud) made us look bad or we made him look good," said Michigan coach Red Berenson in reference to the many scoring opportunities the Wolverines squan- dered on the night. "We've got an outstanding goalie in Mark Michaud," added Miami coach George Gwozdecky.d"(Mich- igan) had some good chances, but Michaud was there. If it hadn't been for (Michaud), the game would have Goaltending shines in series against Miami been over earlier." "I made the big save and the defense was ablebto clear it," said Michaud. "There's more pressure on me because McKichan left to the pros, but I just try to keep (pressure) out." Two of the biggest saves of the night came against Jim Ballantine's shorthanded breakaway 11:48 into the third period to keep the score even at one and a Mike Moes shot from the slot at the 20:00 mark to send the game into overtime. Continuing with Friday night's performances, Sharples again dis- played consistency and solid goal- tending in front of the net, but Michaud was unable to duplicate his heroics from the night before. Michigan capitalized its chances this night, responding for four goals within five minutes in the first period. As the first period buzzer sounded, Michigan walked to the lockerroom with a 5-1 lead and Michaud did not return. Wolverine defenseman Todd Copeland summed it up: "Maybe (Michaud) didn't eat the same thing as he did Friday night." However, frosh Vito Mazzoli replaced Michaud at the beginning of the second to mark his first collegiate action and it was deja vu. "I was very nervous," said the rookie goaltender. "I give the coach a lot of credit for showing some confidence in me," Mazzoli added. Mazzoli responded to his entrance by turning away 23 of 24 shots in* his 40 minutes of work only allowing Don Stone's unassisted goal to penetrate across the goal line with 1:16 to go into the game. Michigan's last goal by Jim Bal- lantine was put into an empty net as the Wolverines won, 7-4. "I thought I played exceptionally well and I expect to receive some more time in the future," Mazzoli* addAt "Every team reacts differently when a goalie change occurs," Sharples said. "And I think they rallied around him." Berenson believes that if yot hold your goals-against-average under three, a team will be suc- cessful in the conference. And it is just this area in which Miami needs improvement, as they held a team under three goals in only 2 games last season. As far as the Wolverines, Sharples continued his play of late last season and if he continues like this, the Michigan team may be skating in front of the best goaltender in the nation. "Every game might come down to one shot or one play," Berenson said. These games proved that.
