With a 2-0 shutout on Friday, Michigan held true to its game plan of slowing down St. Louis' highly mobile forwards. The Wolverines dictated the tempo of the game throughout, though Coach Patti Smith admits they did so more effectively in the second half. "In the second half we began to play with a bit more strength," Smith said. Midfielder Judy Burniskas exhib- ited some of that strength in the first half by forcing a close range attempt through the St. Louis defense on a corner shot. Senior Sharon Cantor followed Burniskas' lead by accurately placing a shot into the St. Louis netting from 15 feet out. However, Smith emphasized the defense's ability to spur an offensive attack. "We took a bit of their attack away and generated our own," she said. The Wolverines then took on and beat Boston College Sunday, 4-2. Though not a league game, Coach Smith felt was a serious challenge to the Wolverines. "Every time a team from the East comes to the Midwest, it's important for us to show our strength," Smith said. But Michigan fell behind, 1-0, only 3:50 into the game. Joelle Kozma scored for B.C. on a shot which was deflected high into the goal. Sheila Jackman increased the Eagles' lead when she netted a shot off a corner 8:21 into the match. "I was a little concerned," said Smith. "Our team has a lot of character, though." The Wolverines did not waste any time getting back in it. Less than four minutes after the Eagles' second goal, Trish Maran rocketed a pass from Sandie Marotti into the net to cut the deficit to one goal. Michigan had another corner opportunity with 14:24 remaining in the first half. Though they failed to get a quick shot, Mary Peters found Kristin Shaiper on the right side, who scored to knot the game at two. Just 1:15 later, Hilary Hughes gave the Wolverines the lead for good when she converted yet another Wolverine corner off a pass from Josee Charvet. "I was really happy that our forwards were finally starting to click with our midfielders," said Smith. "The most important thing is that we played together." Judy Burinskas iced the game with a hard shot from a perfectly executed corner for the only goal of the second half. T'eam {record) 1. Notre Dame 2. Miamni(FL) 3. Colorado 4. Nebraska 5. Michigan 6. Men runners speed up* for meet at Wisconsin Stone ages after rough weekend of Griddes by Phil Green Daily Sports Contributor The men's cross country team needed some improvement Saturday at the Michigan Invitational. The runners made great strides in tuning-up for the Big Ten meet on October 28 in Madison, Wisconsin. On Sept. 9, team time trials had been run on the same course, the University of Michigan golf course. Saturday's times were better for nearly every runner on the hilly track. Jeff Canada, a University grad- uate assistant from Texas, ran the 8,000-meter race in 24 minutes and 39 seconds for the victory. Red- shirted Brad Barquist demonstrated some of the promise in Michigan's future as he raced to a second place finish. Sean Sweat, a first-year runner from Monroe, Michigan, ran a 26:23, good enough for sixth overall and first among Michigan runners. The next five Wolverines, in order of finish, were Frank Wolf, Matt Joseph, Jason Colvin, David Dimcheff, and Chris Childes. David Dimcheff, a junior, was the only Wolverine among the top six not in his first year of eligibility. "I was really pleased with the way they ran," explained coach Ron Warhurst. "They compete very well. You can have all the talent, but if you don't compete well under pressure all that talent will be* wasted." Coach Warhurst planned on using this meet to help him decide which seven runners will compete in Madison. Sweat, Wolf, Joseph, Dimcheff, and Childes are pretty well set at this point. Colvin may travel, but Warhurst may decide to red-shirt him instead. The others runners competing for the remaining spots include first-year racers Phil Sanborn and Matt Schroeder and sophomore Andy Ruzicho. Warhurst will use the next week and a half to decide which athletes will occupy the last two spots. The Wolverines have one more meet, Friday at Eastern Michigan, before the Big Tens. Warhurst expects to send four or five competitors to get some added experience and to help finalize the Madison roster. ...before Stone and afte ..andafer Poor Wolverine hockey player Don Stone. This weekend sure has taken a toll on him. Stone, known as "pooch" or "hound-dog" by his teammates, is howling over his poor perfomance. But not his performance on the ice. In fact, Stone scored a goal Saturday against Miami-Ohio in Michigan's win. However, Stone did not fare as well in his Griddes picks, causingahis youthful look to decay. "When you go out and play with the desire and lustfullness for victory that I do when I play Griddes each week, I guess you can understand why I look so feeble now," Stone said. "I did horrible." Stone and Cubs manager Don Zimmer each picked only two games correct according to sources close to the Griddes headquarters. However, for Stone and all other Griddes hopefuls, you have a second chance. Turn in the copy of games by Friday at 5 p.m. at the Michigan Daily, located at 420 Maynard, and you could win dinner or lunch for two at O'Sullivans Eatery and Pub. A f1 K by John Niyo Daily Sports Writer The women's cross country team has been doing just what they said they would this year. According to the team's motto they're "climbing to the top" this season and they continued that climb with an impressive victory at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships this weekend. A field of eight college teams from Michigan showed up at the University of Michigan golf course only to watch the Wolverines, once again led by senior Mindy Rowand, dash away with the invitational crown. Rowand finished second individually in 18 minutes, 15 seconds to help Michigan total 40 points, outdistancing second-place Michigan State by 14 points. "The team ran pretty well. Mindy was a little disappointed that she didn't win. I think she just went out a little too hard at the start," Foster said. As has been the case all year, Rowand received lots of support from her teammates. Junior Karen Welke (18:49 - 5th place), senior Jennifer McPeck (18:51 - 6th place), and first- year runner Molly McClimmon (18:58 - 8th place) all finished in the top 10 on Saturday. "Those three had great races for us. Jennifer had another strong finish. She kicked by a couple of runners at the finish again. Molly had a sore knee this week in practice, but she had an excellent race as well," Foster said. Those four have been a consistent bunch for the Wolverines. Together they have helped bring home three invitational titles along with one second and one third place finish this fall. Rowand has finished in the top five every time she has raced and last week she was pushed at the finish line by Welke, her own teammate. McPeck has provided fiery leadership along with her fast meet times and McClimmon, the rookie, has provided invaluable support as well. Other Wolverine finishers included Amy Bannister at 19:50, Colleen Yuhn at 19:58 and Megan Nortz at 20:12. They finished, 19th, 22nd and 25th, respectively. According to Foster, the runner's times were slower this weekend as a result of the tough course layout. She added that McPeck's finish was "super" considering the final stretch was a steep hill to the finish line. While times were slower on the home course, the team has been steadily improving its performance throughout the season. "Times have definitely come down. Last weekend we had a couple of season bests at Michigan State. Now, for the next couple of weeks, we're going to concentrate on more speed training to get ready for Big Ten's," Foster said. Oct. 28 is the date the runners are eyeing now. The Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, will be a very competitive meet. Indiana finished sixth in the nation last year and return four of their top five runners. According to Foster, Michigan along with Iowa will challenge the Hoosiers for the title. McPeck is looking for another win. "We've got enough talent. We really want to do better in the Big Ten's this time. I think this is our year."
