Never has non-dairy cheese been elevated to such a high art form as it was during the culturally formative '70s. The thcrmidorean reaction to the '60s at- tempted to reinstate the wholesome innocence of an America that valued family, not LSD. In order to do this, the entertainment magnates decided to return to that age-old institution of cheesiness that had guaranteed success to everyone from Tin Pan Alley to the Little Rascals to Fabian. As a result, America was blessed with the Brady Bunch, Donny and Marie, the Sid and Marty Kroft puppets, and of course the Kraft of TV families, the Partridge Family. With the recent success of Susan Dey on L.A. Law, Clive Davis, in all of his infinite pop wisdom, has decided to capitalize on this with the re-release of some classic Partridge material on a new greatest hits pack- age. The true genius of the record is not the music, although who could possibly live without the 34 seconds of pure pop transcendence of "Come on Get Happy" or David Cassidy's meltingly sweet vocals on a cover of the Association's "Cherish," but rather it is the most brilliant packag- ing since the Partridge's own Shop- ping Bag album which included a shopping bag inside every sleeve. The self-deprecating humor that marks this project is apparent on first glance of the record. The cover is a photograph of a Partridge Fam- ily lunchbox against a Piet Mon- drian painting, suggesting the prob- lem of reconciling haute couture and popular art that all 20th Century intellectuals have had to tackle. The Partridges are certainly no exception to this phenomenon, as is especially apparent in their monumental re- working ot Rupert Holmes' "Echo Valley 2-6809." Then, there are the memoirs of Danny Bonaduce, the role model for all alienated, freckled, red-head eight year-olds. In his tren- chant essay "My Life as a Partridge," Bonaduce explores the source of teen-star angst and aestheticizes pop- ular culture: "Tiger Beat magaz'ne, pooka shell necklaces - I liked it all, even the bell bottoms," and "either on stage in those silly red velvet suits, or just jammin' in the garage, it was like shooting a rock video every Monday." As if Bonaduce's reminiscences of David Cassidy, Susan Dey and Shirley Jones weren't enough, the good folks at Arista have blessed us with "Pop Quiz: The Hits of The Partridge Family and David Cas- sidy." The quiz includes 24 true- false, multiple choice, and essay questions that contain nuggets of priceless information like the fact that Danny Bonaduce appeared in the classic T and A flick II.O.T.S. Considering that the '90s are al- most upon us, the time is right for a critical re-evaluation of the '70s. The Partridge Familys Greatest hits serves this function, defining a bygone era where pasteurized Ameri- can cheese and schmaltz weren't just foods, they were cultural paradigms. -Peter Shapiro ~$1~t PASS IT AROUND I DISTANT Continued from page 10 Distant Voices Still Lives, as in the work of Nicholas Ray and Yazujiro Ozu, it has reached its apotheosis. Despite the film being generally grim and melancholic in outlook, it's very funny in places too, thanks to a wonderful script that has a real feel for the Liverpudlian vernacular and the local humor. It's a great movie, not to be missed. As they'd say in Liverpool, it's the best thing since sliced bread. DISTANT VOICES STILL LIVES is now showing at Ann Arbor 1 & 2.
