The Wolverines raced to a big win, outscoring second-place Michigan State by 30 points. Leading the way were senior Mindy Rowand and junior Karen Welke who finished first and second respectively. "Those two were all alone at the finish. They were way ahead of their nearest competitors," coach Sue Foster said. Michigan's third finisher, senior Jennifer McPeck, turned in an impressive performance of her own, finishing fourth overall. "Jennifer had a super finish. She passed three runners right before the finish line. She had a very nice, strong kick," Foster said. Foster also singled out the performances of first-year runner Molly McClimmon and junior Amy Bannister. "Amy came back and ran better this weekend. She didn't have a good race last week. Molly ran well, too. For a freshman to finish eighth, that's just great," Foster said. Individual performances aside, the team as a whole accomplished its goal as well. Foster said that the team had been working on staying together asba pack during the race. "We talked about having our top five runners finish within about a minute of each other," Foster said. At Michigan State the Wolverines hit that mark with Bannister crossing the finish line as Michigan's fifth runner just 1:09 behind Rowand. Rowand finished the race in a time of 17:32. 4 The "pack" will be at home looking to continue its winning ways this weekend as hosts of the Michigan Intercollegiates Championships. It will be the team's only home meet this season. Blue men finish by Todd Drucker Daily Sports Contributor The Michigan men's cross country team, composed primarily of first-year runners, encountered a problem at the Michigan State Invitational Saturday that did not come as a surprise to coach Ron Warhurst. That problem: rookie runners areoften inconsistent. "They all came to run and we didn't," said Warhurst in response to his team's disappointing fourth-place finish. Although Warhurst expected to bow out to a powerful Kansas team, he was quite shocked to dis- cover that Michigan finished behind Ohio State and Michigan State as well. Out of the four teams participating in the race, the Wolverines finished with a score of 96 points, which put them 32 points away from third-place Ohio State, and a stunning 68 points behind first-place Kansas. After the race Warhurst repeatedly stressed that, "freshmen usually run inconsistently." and seemed to be confident that his team's less that stellar performance was not indicative of their true talents. Warhurst is impressed with his rookies' progress and maintains that every race is valuable in that the more experience a runner has, the better his future performances will be. Sean Sweat crossed the tape first for the Wolverines to place 15th at the event, while Darrly Eddy and Chris Childs finished second and third for Michigan, placing 18th and 20th respectively. Michigan's next contest will be the Wolverine Invitational held in Ann Arbor on Oct.16, and then they are off to Madison, Wisconsin for the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 27. Warhurst hopes that by the Big Ten meet the froshes will have enough experience under their belts to eliminate their earlier inconsistencies, and in turn, make Michigan's presence known. dismally BADGERS Continued from Page 1 Their offense isn't very good right now, but you build a program with defense. And their defense was impressive today." Eventhough the loss puts Wisconsin (1-3 overall , 0-1 in the Big Ten) in its familiar cellar position, Wisconsin head coach Don Morton did find some high points. "We're going to keep improving," Morton said. "A loss is a loss and it's just like any other loss, but there are some definite positives that we can take from this game. We're going to get better offensively and our defense is going to remain the best part of our team." "We are a good football team even though we're only 1-3," said Badger outside linebacker Tim Knoeck. "We're going to surprise some people this year. We surprised Michigan and we'll do it to others as well." r " tift :1 -I JULIE HOLLMAN/gaily breks away on a touchdown run in the third quarter of Michigan's 24-0 Michigan running back Tony Boles rout of Wisconsin. 14 For Exam Preparation Choose to EXCEL! -Learn to Anticipate the Exam -Improve Your Test-Taking Skills -Use Your Study Time More Effectively -Achieve Your Maximum Potential Score Test Preparation 1100 996-1500 South University FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK T-SH IRT PRINTERY " QUALITY GARMENT PRINTING AT REASONABLE PRICES ONE WEEK DELIVERY ON MOST ORDERS " OUR ARTISTS WORK WITH YOU TO PRODUCE SHIRTS YOU CAN BE PROUD OF " COMPLETE LINES OF 100% COTTON & 50150 QUALITY WEARABLES " WE FEATURE 994 l i1 6 *MINIMUM ORDER THE HANES 12 SHIRTS BEEFY - T 1002 PONTIAC TRAIL ANN ARBOR 3 by Adam Benson and Adam Schrager Daily Football Writers Wisconsin did not get a win against Michigan, but they did put an end to an ugly streak in their battles against the Wolverines. The Badgers had allowed Michigan to score in 25 straight quarters, until the Wisconsin defense stifled Michigan in the first quarter. zone since 1976. -Lance Dottin's interception return for a touchdown was Michigan's first since 1985. Garland Rivers picked off a pass and took it back for a score-strangely enough, against Wisconsin. -Bo Schembechler is now 21-0 in fourth games of a season. -Back spasms in the pre-game warm-ups hindered J.J. Grant throughout most of the afternoon. Grant's injury definitely irritated Schembechler: "I don't know how you get hurt in a warm-up. I remember back in the '70's, we used to go out to warm-up and opposing coaches used to come to the end zone to watch us warm-up. That's how hard we hit. We don't warm-up like that anymore, so I don't know how someone got hurt." SCHRAGER Continued from Page 1 landed five-yards short. And that was all in the first quarter. "If I'd been sitting up there, I would have done the same thing," said Schembechler. Saturday's game joined the UCLA matchup as the second out of three games that Schembechler said "we didn't deserve to win." With its next two games on the road against Michigan State and Iowa, there is definitely cause for concern. If Wisconsin can stop the Wolverine ground game, then one can predict that Michigan State will never let it get going. After all, State has stifled the offenses ofA Notre Dame and Miami-the top two teams in the country. The return of injured starting quarterback Michael Taylor next week might be all the Michigan's needs to get its 33 rpm offense moving at 78 rpm. Schembechler, though, wouldn't address the State game until "I cat." After Saturday's ugly 24-point victory, that meal may have required something to coat his stomach. -While the offense struggled, the defense retained its previous form against the Badgers.
