The Michigan Daily - Monday, October 9,1989 - Page 7 PROTEST Continued from Page 1 Chrissy, a 10-year-old from the shelter who attended the rally, said the can't remember how long she has lived at the shelter. All she knows is that it has been a really long time. At an additional march which be- gan at the Pentagon before the main rally, which started from Washington Monument, Ann Arborites joined with many others in urging members of the Pentagon to transfer their federal funding from building bombs to building houses. "The government is giving so much money to the military that we are rebelling against them," said Rebekah Patnode, an eighth-grader who traveled from Orange, Mass., to the demonstration. "We're fired up; we're not going to take it no more," chanted a group of people representing the Detroit/Wayne County Homeless as they marched through the crowd. Added actor Gregory Hines, one of the rally's featured speakers: "It's gotten way past the time when we can just walk over people and not care about it." Hines, along with other speakers at the rally, said there are three mil- lion homeless people in America. Homeless families make up 76 per- cent of that number, they said. Other rally speakers included the Rev. Jesse Jackson and singer Tracy Chapman. "There have been 77 percent cuts in federal funding of affordable hous- ing," said speaker Coretta Scott FOUND Thursday.9/28, a pair of glasses in diag. Call 995-8450. King, wife of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "We are here to protest budget priorities which pro- vide peanuts for the homeless and tax breaks for the wealthy." One of the rally's main themes was that the enthusiasm of the day should be brought back and used in the community. "It's going to take more than a trip. It's going to take a struggle," said Laura Dresser, a member of the Ann Arbor Homeless Action Committee, at an Ann Arbor send- off before the rally Friday night. Dresser's committee has been ac- tive on city housing issues for sev- eral years. Currently, the group sponsors weekly protests of the city's proposed parking structure be- hind Kline's Department Store, say- ing the money spent on the structure could be better used on the home- less. To continue with the effort, the Washtenaw Network for Equatl Economic Development Service is sponsoring classes beginning Nov.'"7 in the Detroit Edison building, 425. S. Main St., for the area's low-in- come residents. Classes will focus. on how people can get better paying: jobs and put themselves through col-' lege. "I've never met a poor person who wanted to be poor, but I always. meet poor people who don't know* how to break the cycle of poverty," said Talonda Cabell-Khalid, the ser-w vice's director.
