I Page 2-The Michigan Daily/New Student Edition - Thursday, September 7, 1989 A note to our readers: Greetings and salutations! 99 years ago, on September 29, 1890, the first issue of the then-titled 'U. of M. Daily' hit the streets. It featured two ads, faculty announcements, and a story entitled "OUR RUGBY TEAM." The Daily has changed a lot through the years, but one thing holds firm and fast, our tradition of editorial freedom. This is true especially this year. Some of you may have noticed that our masthead says "99 Years of Editorial Freedom" for the second straight year. It isn't our fault; someone, and we won't name names, made a counting error some years back. On the eve of the Daily's 100th birthday, we thought we'd set the record straight. C'est la vie! For those new students not familiar with the Daily, this is the New Student Edition. As the name implies, it is aimed towards y'all in particular. We hope it helps to introduce you to the University and city in a way you never thought mere mortals could. But wait, there's more. Returning students need not despair. This paper is also for you. We didn't name it after you vets, but we think you'll find it an interesting recap of what you missed around campus during the summer (minus the humidity, that is). Many of our stories have attempted to shed some new light on some old topics. Our writers have also oc- casionally given their personal analysis of subjects you're likely to encounter here on campus. At some points we may have taken the liberty of injecting opin- ion into our surveys of the city and University. Don't take our word for it, though: you have four years (more or less) to decide for yourself if you think our words were wise. Lastly, you may want to hold on to to this issue. We think you'll find it a valuable asset for the up-coming year. So enjoy the NSE. We feel we've put a good amount of effort into bringing you a lively mix of hard news, features, editorials, essays, photos, columns, and humorous vignetes. Take your time to pour over the 90 some pages. Get the ink on your fingers. It's tasty. You'll probably read some things you'll like. You'll also probably read some things you dislike. Often you'll agree with the author, perhaps as often you won't. Use the information to your advantage. Dazzle friends and family with the breadth of your knowledge. Organize NSE clubs. Set aside an hour a day to read the NSE and just meditate. Take out the trash. Be nice to animals. Watch your chloreesterol. Sorry I guess we (Alex) got carried away. Anyways, remember the immortal words of Tigers manager Sparky Anderson: "You're gonna lose some ballgames and you're gonna win some ballgames and that's about it. Vol. C - No. 1 The Michigan Daily (ISSN 0745-967) is published Monday through Friday during the Fall and Winter terms by students at the University of Michigan. The subscription rate for both terms is $25 within Ann Arbor and $35 outside the city. The Daily is a member of The Associated Press.
